Thousand-calorie dishes you might accidentally order at top chains

Check out these holiday foods. Prepare to be shocked. And then prepare to avoid them at all costs...

Panera Bread Pumpkin Muffin = 530 calories and 20g fat!

Pumpkin RULES and the second we see these goodies pop up in Panera's glass
cases, we want them. BUT we resist. Why? Um, over FIVE HUNDRED CALORIES
for a muffin? We think not. One baked treat is not going to make up about a quarter
of our total food for the day, so we think it's best to move along. Make a loaf of our
    Perfect Pumpkin Bread instead!

Ruby's Diner Fresh Baked Apple Pie A-La-Mode = 1,000 calories and 35g fat!

Apple pie is one of those universally appealing desserts, but these numbers sort of gross us out. What kind of ice cream are they putting on that pie?!? How big of a slice must it be?!? 1,000 calories for a fruit-based dessert should be illegal (and if we ruled the land, it would be).

Au Bon Pain Holiday Turkey Wrap = 740 calories and 28g fat!

Those sneaky ABP people KNOW that we all get lured in by the word "holiday." Yeah, cranberries are great with turkey, but you don't need to swallow 28 grams of fat to satisfy that itch (we blame the blue cheese). Thanks, but no thanks. Keep your wrap. We'll wait 'til Thanksgiving for the real deal. And our advice to ABP is to spend less time conjuring up fattening foods and more time trying to find a way to remove the word "pain" from its name.

Boston Market Pastry Top Chicken Pot Pie = 800 calories and 48g fat!
Mmmmmmmm, pot pie. Gravy... pastry dough... the chunky meats... NO! Forget all of those things and think about the 48 grams of fat that come
with it. This pot pie may be delicious, BUT we recommend making our Kickin' Chicken Pot Pie swap instead. It still has the creamy, the flaky,
and the chicken appeal, but less of the bad stuff. And it tastes AMAZING. Pinky swear.

    Chili's Country-Fried Steak Platter = 1,470 calories and 84g fat!

If cool temperatures make you crave stick-to-your-ribs-and-thighs
home-cooking, be careful when dining out. This Southern-style meal has
1,470 calories and a CRAZY amount of fat in it. If you end up at Chili's, you're
WAY better off sticking to the Guiltless Grill. Trust us.

Dunkin' Donuts Pumpkin Donut = 300 calories and 16g fat!

Donuts are tiny. And this time, the Double D packed 300 calories and 16
grams of fat into a small circular cake with a hole in the middle. It's just
not worth it... especially since the thing isn't even filling enough to eat for breakfast. What're you gonna do? Pair it with a couple of eggs? Eat
TWO donuts? Forget it. Skip this thing. And if you're eyeing the Lowfat Caramel Apple Muffin there, just a friendly heads up: That thing may only
have 3g fat, but it contains a whopping 430 calories! Stick with the coffee and egg-white flatbread offerings at DD, people!

Wow, I can't even hang anymore,I'm on the straight and narrow..I eat meat once every three months.I use to eat 300 calories donuts but I can't even swing it now..

Once again, we have flawed logic regarding the terrible awful calories in fast food. Most people do not eat these things EVERY DAY. Not even every week. You might as well say NEVER eat ice cream, NEVER eat cake, NEVER eat fried chicken. These things are not good for you, but as a treat every once in a while? It's absurd to never, ever indulge. This article only makes sense if you eat these items for breakfast/lunch/dinner EVERY DAY. I'm sure some idiots out there do, but most people don't.

I had TWO pumpkin donuts and a pumpkin latte for breakfast from DD last week. That was easily 1000-1200 calories. It was followed by a salad for lunch and whole wheat pasta with salt-free homemade tomato sauce and broccoli for dinner. And I haven't had donuts from DD since, nor had I before for well over a month. Everything in moderation, including country fried steak, aka heaven on a plate (not Chili's of course)

Does anyone bite into muffins, donuts, pie or chicken fried steak expecting something lean and low-cal? Give me a break. If you're watching your weight, you either eat these things once in a great while or just leave them alone because they are obviously (not secretly) not good for you.

I love me my (dressing-free) salads when I can make them myself - refuse to order them at restaurants because I'm picky about my veggies and assorted toppings, but sorry... I CANNOT stomach tofu. I don't understand how people can eat that stuff, other than I do understand we all have different tastes, so if you love it, more for you! :)

On topic, all the items listed were a serious "duh". If you don't realize the stuff on the list is essentially junk food, then you're missing some brain cells. Occasional splurges (once every few weeks or so) are no biggie, but I'd much rather splurge on other things personally, like making the half hour drive up to my favorite do-it-yourself salad bar (family swears I'm part rabbit with my love for the raw veggies) that carries the sweet tea I love so much.

Joy she isn't talking about holiday or seasonal food, she is taliking about thousand-calorie dishes you might accidentally order at top chains!

The best way to avoid these "tasty treats" is do what I do, avoid frequenting these death traps.

Screw you Yahoo and your dumb-ass articles! Don't tell me what foods to avoid. I'll decide that for myself. Why not tell people the truth! Eat whatever the hell you want, as long as you stay active and exercise. This is why people hate yahoo.

Country fried steak is eaten about once every other season, here. Glad to learn not to bother with Chili's version.

These posts are always absurd. I am starting to wonder how low the USA scores on the IQ meter to compliment this woman, and furthermore, there's nothing at ALL wrong with a 300 calorie meal! My goodness, that's like the bare minimum you should be eating per meal. Many of these aren't even seasonal foods!

Maybe Hungry Girl wouldn't be so hungry if she went and got a job she was good at? Like...retail? I mean she's great at trying to sell you on ideas which are commonsense, and she tries to make country-fried steak sound like a seasonal meal and has convinced some people it is. ;) Sounds like she needs a job selling big label items to the gulliable.

Glad she didn't mention pumpkin pie. Woot!

I worked at Ruby's for many years, the pie is easily enough for 3 people after eating a meal. The ice cream is actually soft serve and the pie is heated and drizzled with caramel syrup. I'd much rather have a kid's size malt, less calories and not as deadly.

Oh who cares? Only in this country of ours do we have delicious food that we are told repeatedly to not eat. What a crock of crap-I'll eat what I want, in between workouts, and be happy-what ever happened to balance? And if I gain 10lbs thru the holidays-big effin deal, what good is life if you gotta be a neurotic mess about the little things?-A happy healthy size 6 who eats what I want!

Someone should investigate the "writers" of these articles. They say "don't eat this, don't eat that", maybe they really have financial interests in the competitiors of these places.

I know and most everyone knows what is good or bad for them or at least I would think so. If you exercise regularly, than you really dont have to worry about these kind of things. I always notice the people that are the unhappiest are those who are always exercising, always calorie counting and always concerned about their looks. Be happy, it's a much healthier option.

My husband orders the chicken fried steak every time we go to chili's!!!! lol... Go figure! But then he never gains weight like I would eating that cr*p!!

I looooooove Panera's pumpkin muffins. And I've got the metabolism to handle them, so I'll just go on eating them.
    • pisteu  •  2 years 7 months ago

    • KennethG  •  2 years 7 months ago
Oh, for God's sake. When will these food Nazi's leave us alone?

You guys have no idea what constitutes a seasonal dish, do you? I agree with Joy, pot pie and country fried steak are regular menu items. I'm up north in Chicago. But, even during traveling about the country, neither of those dishes is difficult to procure no matter what time of year you're talking about. A good restaurant which serves pot pie might alter it with some more seasonal vegetables, but that would be the only thing which would make it a "seasonal" dish. And 800 calories for dinner? That's hardly outrageous for a full meal at a restaurant; especially when compared to some things you could be ordering instead.

Unlike her, though, I'll give you the donut. 300 calories for breakfast isn't terrible, but for a single item, of which you are probably going to eat more than one, it is a bit much.
