User post: Would you raise your own poultry?

The number of people growing vegetables in home or community gardens has increased tremendously in the last year or two.

Experiencing a similar renaissance is backyard chickening. (Chickening = birth of a word.) How else to explain the existence of Backyard Poultry magazine?

In this week's issue (Sept. 28) of The New Yorker, the author Susan Orlean ("The Orchid Thief") writes about her foray into raising chickens.

"Chickens seem to be a perfect convergence of the economic, environmental, gastronomic, and emotional matters of the moment, plus, in the past few years, they have undergone an image rehabilitation so astonishing that it should be studied by marketing consultants."

Unfortunately, Orlean's article, "The It Bird," isn't available online, but a three-minute video of Orlean and her chickens is on The New Yorker site. Click here to watch.

No I won't be raising fowl. What would I do with all that chickenshit? Onc raised, then I guess I have to wrench it's neck. Pull it's feathers, feet and head off?

I'd rather raise my already-raised sons again, and no thanks: glad I'm done raising things!

Huh? Straub's has a great organic hen all ready for the grill or the saute pan.

We have chickens in our backyard for pet/egg-related reasons, but I can't imagine having to kill them!

No, I would not... because I won't be able to bear to have it slaughtered for meat. Already tried it twice... ended up giving the meat to somebody else. Could not eat something I raised. Ever. :(

Not to eat but I do have over 40 chickens for eggs and at one point had over 60. Those are the best eggs. But i raised my girls and boys from chicks. They are like family. Cant eat family.

We do have chickens and overall they have proved relatively easy. We only use them for eggs, not meat. You can read more particulars on the subject at my blog... http://raisinggreenchickens.blogspot.com/

Do you really think your organic chicken from the market had a better life than the non-organic one? Since there's no set rule on what makes meat "organic," it's extremely likely your chicken was force-fed and lived in a cage all it's life just like non-organic ones. It just wasn't given antibiotics.

I'd totally raise chickens. My grandparents had them, and some of my best memories are helping gather eggs and tending to the chickens. Too bad I live in an apartment!

Yes, and we do! But only for eggs. Couldn't stand the idea of eating my own chickens. Just some thoughts for anybody contemplating raising chickens: they can eat a lot of pesky bugs, good fertilizer producer if you have a garden, and if you're limited on space there are bantam chickens. Eggs are smaller but just use two, and some like Cornish are still good for meat!

      Only for the eggs.

Most if not all people have no clue how to actually sustain their own lives by farming and raising animals for food. It is actually pretty sad. Our culture as a whole, has lost so much. How do you think our species has survived so long? Going back to basics seems such a strange concept for most people in todays world.

Would I raise chickens for the dinner table? Heck Yeah I would. If I had the land I would do it in a heartbeat.

I have a cousin who has a home and about two acres. Never in her life did she imagine raising chickens. But when she married, he was used to that world. They raise the animals, chickens, pigs, and other assorted creatures. When the animals are of a right age, size and health, they take them to a local butcher.

The butcher then kills, plucks, cuts, and prepares the meat. They then go and pick up the meat, they raised themselves. Bring it home and put it in a large freezer. They feed there large family for quite some time on this. And do not have to spend outragous amounts of money on chemical filled , poor qualtiy meat at the store.

I had a few chickens that I kept strictly for eggs--I don't think I'd be able to kill and butcher them, though! My mother took them for me when we moved out of state and I miss having all those fresh eggs.

if I didnt live in an apartment i would have some chickens and maybe a couple goats. My parents have a small lot(about 2acres) in the country and are getting a couple of goats this next spring. Considered a cow, a little large for their wants/needs, but it would be very economical. They grow they're own veggies and have a couple fruit trees.
We could all use a little animal human interaction, get back to our ROOTs

my next door neighbor decided to raise chickens and built a coop without checking with the town first. not everyone can raise chickens even if you do live in the country. also, make sure your neighbors are ok with your project as it will impact their daily lives. unfortunately, the smell was horrible and the rooster crowing all day long was a nightmare. we asked them to shut down the operation altogether. unfortunately we are no longer friends so please consider others before starting your project blindly.

i'd raise chickens for eggs, but not meat. cleaning chickens for cooking is too much work as i am lazy, used to watch my aunt ring chickens necks and prepare wonderful meals of her farm raised chickens but plucking and cleaning is too much trouble for me. the supermarket is the place to get chicken. at least for me. you vegans go eat your grass.

      I would consider it.

Twenty years we hand raised a 28 lb Turkey. She was spoiled. When I came home from work she would jump in my lap while I was still in my car. That was the best bird I ever tasted. I would raise chickens for food now if it were not for community restrictions
