Why we love fall: 6 amazing apple pies

The only thing that got me through a 6 AM spin class this morning was the thought of apple pie. I know what you're thinking. Apple pie for breakfast? Hey, a craving is a craving and fall is just around the corner.

After class I went for the gold and got a slice. It was warm and seriously attractive, but didn't taste good. To be honest, it kind of sucked. The apples weren't sweet and the crust wasn't flaky.

Oh, how I should have gone for my morning muffin (cue violin) and known better than to buy a slice of pie. The best pies come straight from a home oven. I sound like an overzealous, bake-o-holic, but I digress. There's no reason to waste a serious craving on a bad piece of pie so to spare you bad pie "trauma," here are 6 delicious versions that will make the summer's end a little bit sweeter.

    1.Lattice-Topped Apple Pie
What's the secret to this stellar Food & Wine apple pie? It calls for both tart and sweet apples.

    2.Grandma Ople's Amazing Apple Pie
Interesting name for a recipe, but who cares? It's really good!

    3.Caramelized Apple Pie with Calvados
This swanky version of the beloved apple pie will impress the pants off your dinner guests.

    4.Cheap n' Easy Apple Cobbler
This recipe won't win any all-natural accolades but it will without a doubt save you time and money.

    5. Diet-Lovers' Hungry Girl's Apple Pie in the Sky Smoothie
Who said you can't drink an apple pie and stay skinny?

    6. Apple Crumble Pie
I call this the "I meant to do it," pie. If your pies looks bad, crumble it up and act like it was all a part of your master plan.

Great recipes! I love that during fall, you can make a whole event out of apples. Go apple picking, try new kinds out, and then choose what you're going to use in the pies. And the best part is having your house smell like apples all day!!! For another great treat, check out this recipe for apple caramel nut bars.

You're making me both homesick and hungry. I grew up in Upstate New York which is known for its apples. Now that I live in the South, I miss those cool fall days where we'd pick the apples off the tree in our backyard. I also miss all the delicious apples we used to have easy access to. Most of what we get here are tiny and bland.

I could so go for some nice apple crumble for breakfast, preferably with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top!
