Sheer fabrics tend to make a comeback each season. Whether it is lace or chiffon, the trend always seems to be hanging in the shadows. This spring and summer, the trend is taking a minor turn into futuristic fashion with mesh, perforation, and abstract cut outs taking a bigger role.
Typically mesh is shown on sports jerseys due to the lightweight, breathable aspect. That is not what designers have in mind for this season though. Instead of showing mesh in its most traditional fashion, they are taking the sporty fabric and teaming it with silk, leather, velvet or lace to give it a complete makeover.
Hurley Featherweights Mesh Maxi dress takes mesh to a glamorous level while maintaining the comfort factor. This dress can also be converted into a maxi skirt by simply folding the ripped top down. Wear with a contrasting light-weight tank and embellished metallic sandals to complete the summer feel of this design.
Perforated fabric, especially when used in leather, lends a toughness that traditional sheer fabric lacks. Perforations in leather can be seen in shoes this season, belts and an upscale designer leather dress.
Versace Perforated Leather Trench Dress is far out of my price range, but it is a good example of the versatility of the style.
Raoul Perforated Leather Dress is another good example of the trend. This deep blue shift dress features perforated leather in the front with a smooth leather back. Pair this classic silhouette with statement pumps and simple jewelry.
Cutaway fashion is nothing new, but this time around the cutaways are found in more unconventional spots or veiled with mesh, perforated leather or used as a frame for intricate lacing. Instead of noticeable cutouts at the waistline or upper back, look for interesting futuristic cuts around the lower back, underarms, or even the thighs.
Practical ways to incorporate this trend is to combine the skin-baring items with a crisp blazer or layer over a metallic tank top for a flash of color. Another easy way to give this trend a whirl is to choose a new pair of shoes featuring one of the open styles such as these Eileen Fisher perforated ballet flats or. Vaneli Angy Mesh Mule.
