Tanning, Au Naturel: How To Fake A Bronze Hue With Ingredients From Your Kitchen

Last week, we gave you suggestions for safe, natural sunless tanning lotion. But if you want to be absolutely sure the ingredients you're putting on your skin are safe, you could also try making your own with ingredients that are right under your nose. You can get a bronzed look from all-natural items in your pantry (no trip to the pharmacy with lists of chemicals to avoid required). Basically, you've got two options for an all-natural, DIY tan: tea or cocoa.

The tea tanner will last longer (three or four days from application), whereas the cocoa tanner will wash off as soon as you shower or swim. All of it reminds me a little too much of dying my hair with kool-aid in junior high (never a pretty process), but if you really want to know what's going into your tanning lotion-and save some money, too-you can't really beat a concoction you make in your own kitchen. Here's how to pantry tan:

Summer Skin Safety: Our Sunscreen Shopper's Checklist

    Tea Tanning

What you need: black tea bags, water, sesame oil and lanolin (a waxy substance derived from sheep's wool)
    How to make it:
    • Boil 3/4 cup water.
    • Steep 3-4 bags black tea in water for five to 10 minutes.
    • Pour ¼ cup tea in blender or food processor.
    • Add ¼ cup sesame oil and ¼ cup lanolin
    • Blend slowly, adding the rest of the tea
    Application:
    • Put the mixture in a spray bottle and spray-coat skin, or apply with a sponge
    • Wait 'til it dries completely before dressing so it doesn't stain clothes

    Cocoa Color

What you need: ¼ cup cocoa powder; 1 cup of any sort of natural, white lotion
    How to make it:
    • Mix the cocoa and the lotion

Um yeah I'll just stick to a light sunscreen and the sun. No fuss, no mess. I don't burn and still manage a light tan. Now if all my freckles would just merge, I'd be much darker.

      sounds like a fun project!

I personally like Nivea's self tanner. It smells good upon initial application (even thought it starts to smell "tanny" after awhile like all the others), and works if you make a habit of applying it once or twice a day.

My trick? Apply to ONLY your "white zones" (bikini area, butt, and boobies) to make your body one shade. Your whole body will look tanner, and the best part? No one can see any mistakes! It's a real self confidence booster, and better for you than tanning beds or sun.

Oh yes, baby oil and iodine, fried my skin and also let me with 'terrible' sunspots, it is a true wonder that I have any skin left. Would not recommend this to anyone especially since our ozone is even thinner now.

My mom used to do the baby oil and iodine thing. She used to fry herself in the sun. She is a california blonde (*sigh*- I am pale and olive skinned with auburn hair, what the heck happened!) and I have seen pictures of her looking like Malibu Barbie! LOL. Thankfully, she wised up and stopped. She doesn't have bad wrinkles or leathery skin, but she does have bad sunspots everywhere.

The tea tanner reminds me of a product Aveda used to sell. It was an instant tanner, and lasted a few days and it's primary tanning ingredient was walnuts or walnut shells. If you have ever shelled walnuts you know how stained it makes your hands. I guess this was why they chose it. I wonder if they still sell it? It gave a nice color.

Baby oil & iodine works great but if you aren't careful you'll fry! I always wanted to fry back in the day. Glad we get older and wiser!

and the iodine colours the baby oil this bright magenta colour. very pretty! of course, zero spf. the smell of baby oil and iodine is a reminder of the 60's and 70's to me too. thanks for the good memories!

Anonymous & Carol B. I was just asking my Mom about that the other night ... she had no idea what I was talking about. I knew something about iodine; but I didn't realize they mixed it w/ baby oil. Makes sense ... thanks!

When I was a kid [around 1966] my sisters [8 & 10 yrs older] used to buy a big bottle of baby oil and pour in a small bottle of iodine medicine that you would put on a cut in those days. You shake and apply. Then they would sunbathe and they used to look great! We have heard of other gals using this as well. It is a skin antiseptic so it can't hurt. Iodine has a brown tint so it stains the skin nicely and the baby oil keeps it moist as you tan. I don't remember them ever having a bad sunburn though you have to sunbathe responsibly and not between 11:00AM & 2:00 PM when the sun is highest and hottest.

Of course it will come off on your clothes. And the Tea stain would also rub off leaving an oil slick to boot.

Does the cocoa tanner rub off on your clothes?
    • anonymous  •  11 months ago
The cocoa would make you smell good too! But probably rub off on random things and I do not want to leave a brown smudge from my butt on a couch...Lol!

Baby oil and iodine. I still use it. Gives great color with minimal sun exposure. I always keep my face and hands protected with a good spf.
