The Only Products You Need for Great Skin

Dr. Amy's 25 Best Products for Your Face

Who cares whether it's summer? It's never too late to spring clean your beauty supplies. Toss the crusty mascara, the disintegrating blush, and the gray polish that's so last season. And while you're purging, get rid of the tried-but-not-true skin care products that didn't live up to the hype.

Take this skin care quiz to learn what your skin needs to stay looking young.

When you restock, think minimalist. All you really need is a cleanser, a couple of moisturizers -- a daytime one with sunscreen, a super hydrating one for night -- and an exfoliant. Pick one from each of the following categories. All are derm-tested products that get a thumbs-up from RealAge skin expert Amy Wechsler, MD, author of The Mind-Beauty Connection.

Before you buy any beauty treatments, find out if they test on animals. There's nothing beautiful about an animal in pain!

Olay products are the best that money can buy. Their products should definitely have been listed. That company has been around forever and they do extensive research and as a result - the get better and better. I'd say L'Oreal comes in at a close second to them. These two brands are not only cheaper, but far superior to the ones that were recommended.

I agree with the Vaseline users. Like most of us, I have spent a fortune on products thru the yrs that didn't do diddly! I went to work for a dermatologist who told patient after patient that expensive products don't produce any better results than using Vaseline. I hesitantly tossed all the stuff taking up space in my bathroom and started using Aveeno cleanser with a buff pad for exfoliating, Vaseline as moisturizer, chilled Witch Hazel for toner, Neutrogena sun block and HATS and sunglasses !! I've been doing this for 5 yrs. I am 61 yrs old and no one guesses. Most people say 50, I have alot more shelf space in the bathroom and I've certainly saved $$$. Can't beat it !

If you have acne-prone skin, don't use an exfoliator often. That's like the number one rule. It spreads the bacteria and you break out more...

Don't use Clean and Clear Advantage. I have pretty clear skin, but I always seem to have 1-2 pimples especially due to hormones. I use Neutrogena's line of Stress relief facila cleansers, I use the cream cleanser, oil pads at night, and the moisturizer. I have combination skin and with mild break-outs around the T zone. I found that Neutrogena works best for me, plus when switching to a different product it takes time for it to work its best. I also like St. Ives Green Tea scrub, it's not as abrasive as their other scrubs, less harsh on the skin yet leaves it very clean. I stick to my cream cleanser, exfoliant, and moisturizer.

I recently started using ponds deep cleanser cold cream. I grew up on regular ponds cream and it worked very well for me, except for the shine so i stopped using it. The only makeup I wear is eyeliner so it seems unnecessary for me to exfoliate when I don't use much of anything on my face. I figure ponds would do well because it is a cleanser but it doesn't dry out my skin. I know most people don't use it because many people break out but that's not an issue for me.

I'm always afraid and unsure of what products to use because of how people always say that too much product can actually worsen your skin. I'm the minimalist to the extreme in that for the past couple of years i stopped using anything on my face. In the last two months i started using bodyworks lotion on my face so that helped it from drying but I know it's not meant for the face so i switched over to the cleanser. I'm not sure if I should pair the ponds cleanser with the cream or just use the cream. I read a few reviews for it where people claimed to have used only the cream their entire life and their skin is great even at an old age. I just don't want to fall into a cycle of trying a million products and routines just to find the best ones.

For a lovely light face moisturizer I like to use 'Yes to Carrots'.....it's an all natural lotion that melts right into your skin and is not greasy at all!!! It does not have a scent....which is great for me. I love it!!!! Try it for yourself!

You do not need a separate morning and night moisturizer, nor do you need all these fancy chemical filled products. Go all natural your skin and body will thank you.

Cathe, vaseline on your face,ARE you for real??? How nasty you realize that's made from the same stuff gas for your car is made from right?

what can i use to close visible pores on my face?
    • Margie  •  11 months ago
I know this will sound strange but I use that Bouderains Butt Paste on my face after morning cleansing. It has zinc oxide which is a a sunscreen. Then I put Johnsons creamy shea butter oil on afterwards. It is smooth and has dimethicone which is a natural primer for skin. I have tried really expensive stuff and this goes on so nicely that I hardly ever even use a foundation. I use a concealer under my eyes and around my nose. I blend it in with a brush. After that, I take a make up brush and just kind of blend everything together with circular motion and then set it with face powder and a brush. I am 55 and after I have tried tons of things, this is very anti-aging and works really well for me. Both these products are incredibly cheap.

Jackie kennedy used a combination of olive and almond oil on her skin her entire adult life. Goes to show you do not need expensive products. I use Vitamin E. I like the advice for vaseline, will try that to.

All marketing. So many less expensive products are just as good or much better.
    • Erlangerlady  •  11 months ago
Good old extra virgin olive oil make for a wonderful moisturizer & vitamin E/Almond oil under the eye does great. I'm 48 but get asked out by men in their early 30's quite often....

Clinique #1 toner is alcohol free and does Not dry out the skin. Aquaphor is a great substitute for vaseline. I have looked 20 years younger than my age all my life, and I use vaseline or aquaphor under the eyes before bed. It is as good as the pricey products. But use it each night on clean skin. For my face, Eucerin does the job as a moisturizer at night and in the day, Clinique dramatically different lotion does the trick.

I agree with Lucky! A good love life, and private life in general,is what makes everyone happy and that just shines through and is better than all creams combined together!:)))

I only use products that are made without cruelty to animals. Most of these test cruelly on animals.
My Dermo told me the best routine is forget the toner as it drys out the collegen in your skin,.
Use cold water to wash your face, and dry it gently with a washcloth , exfloiate only once a week and
do it very gently, use moisturizer with SPF during the day and a heavier cream at night. I use the same night face cream on my eyes or pure organic vitamin E oil. I do a herbal steam once a month and have for years, its very good for opening pores and giving you a natural glow. I only use 3 skin products that I need, keeps cost down and that way I can buy cruelty free. I am 50 but look 30 and no one believes my age. My Mom taught me it is all about routine and taking care of your skin every day.
She was so beauitful and had a simple skin care routine.
Olay is the worse for your skin, lot of chemicals. Estee Lauder does not test on animals and has prefected anti aging with healthy products.

I have used vaseline on my face for many years small amount before I go to bed,
    • Lucky  •  11 months ago
Yes you can use cheap and pure things like vaseline under your eyes and witch hazel as a toner. The secret is to use the products every day on clean skin. And have a good love life.
