Down the Garden Path-
THE PLACE:
Brookgreen Gardens, Murrels Inlet, South Carolina
WHO VISITED:
Elizabeth and Hanson Tipton of Knoxville, Tennessee, and their daughter, Margaret, age 6, and niece, Victoria, 10.
WHY THEY LOVED IT:
This National Historic Landmark is a museum turned inside out: its 300 acres are divided into spectacular garden rooms displaying over a thousand sculptures of animals, mythological heroes, and more. "We loved being able to run free in the gardens, picking our favorite sculptures as we went along," Elizabeth says. The kids also played in the Garden Room for Children (pictured) and visited the native animals in the cypress swamp aviary and the Lowcountry Zoo. Admission is $12 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6 to 12. Tickets are valid for seven consecutive days.
WHILE YOU'RE THERE:
The Tiptons recommend seeing the alligators and turtles on Brookgreen's Creek Cruise Lowcountry Excursion, a one-hour nature and history tour aboard a 48-foot pontoon boat. Tickets are $7 for adults, $4 for kids ages 12 and under.
