YOUR FRIENDS' ACTIVITY

Summer vacation destinations that keep tweens active and healthy

Where will you take your tweens on summer vacation? What will you do there? Does your vacation spot encourage tweens to be active or passive? While touring NASA is educational, it's a fairly passive vacation idea. Likewise with museums, train rides and such. It wouldn't hurt Mom and Dad to get a little exercise either, would it? Why not make your vacation a more active one for both you and your tweens?

Try something athletic and unique this summer. How about some zip lining, indoor sky-diving or paddle-boarding? Make vacationing with tweens an adventure for the whole family. Thanks to their popularity, these activities can even be engaged in on a staycation. That way you can tuck your tween into their own bed after a day of exhilarating activity.

Take active tweens hiking on a summer camping vacation. Don't just hang around the tent or camper, stuffing your faces. Get out and hike those trails. Bring along healthy snacks and plenty of water. Hiking is hard work. Still, your tweens might surprise you with their endurance. They might even outlast you. That's OK. Just take solace in the fact that they're building healthy habits for life.

Be sneaky about keeping tweens active on summer vacation. Take them to places they don't think of as healthy. What tween doesn't love water parks and amusement parks? Both involve a ton of walking from ride to ride. Most water park rides are athletic in nature. Plus, the whole family will stay cool and comfortable while exercising.

How about a vacation venue that demands activity? Cruise ships take you to tropical locales where tweens can engage in all sorts of physically active fun. The whole family can go scuba diving, swimming or simply take a long stroll through local shops for unique gift items. Tweens will never suspect that shopping for souvenirs keeps them fit.

Why not hit the slopes? Sure, it's summer where you are. That doesn't mean it's summer everywhere. Cool off this summer by taking kids skiing out of your realm. Not your idea of a good summer vacation? That's OK. Ski resorts often have summer activities too. One resort I know of offers climbing walls, mountain biking, rope walking and much more. Kids will have a blast staying active on summer vacation at venues like this. They won't even know it's good for them!
