It seems that actress Vivica A. Fox and her boy toy/former fiance, Omar "Slimm" White have joined the ranks of other cougar couples that have called it quits. There are all sorts of stereotypes associated with this kind of relationship. We love judging women who choose younger men as their romantic partners. And when these romances fall apart, we often call upon these stereotypes to understand where things went wrong. Although age sometimes has nothing to do with the break-ups, there are many hidden ways that an age difference plays a part. Here are some examples you might not have thought of.
'I'm older; I know better.'
Some older women may not see their younger beaus as equal counterparts. Often, the sentiment is subliminal. Women who are older naturally understand that their more extensive life experience grants them a certain kind of wisdom (even more so if they have already raised children). Slimm revealed his breakup with the actress didn't have anything to do with the age difference. But he did admit to a certain level of drama in relationship. Vivica may or may not have exercised this attitude in their romance. But in general, it's easy to slip into an air of condescension when you believe that you have more life experience than someone else.
Cougars may look sexy; but quite a few of them are actually rather insecure about their looks and/or sex appeal. Many women who date younger men claim that they are not doing so in an attempt to reclaim their own youth. But insecurity leaks out in many different ways. Going overboard with sexy clothes and hanging out in all the "young hot spots" are just a few of the clues that a woman is attempting to squeeze herself psychologically into another age bracket. But to assume that all "cougars" are having this issue would be presumptuous. In any case, when older women try too hard to relate to their younger boyfriends, the guys can sometimes feel uncomfortable after a period of time.
The Age Gap Looms
A large gap in age between a woman and man definitely does present its problems. The woman may not necessarily struggle to grasp younger social references in pop culture. But she may find that her younger counterpart is less refined in his courting skills. In addition to that, he just may not have the necessary tools to handle certain kinds of bumps in the road.
Relationships are already complicated. Finding someone who is on your mental and emotional wavelength often has nothing to do with age. But the obvious issues that we relate to an age gap aren't always the ones that tear relationships apart.
