Even young kids can handle simple bathroom chores.Once our preschooler started becoming more independent and helpful, we started realizing our little one was old enough to begin helping around the house. We started with simple activities like carrying dishes from the table to the kitchen, but it wasn't long before we found other kid-friendly chores he could handle, from straightening his bed sheets to even helping in the bathroom. Here are a number of bathroom chores that kids (even the youngest) can handle:
Restocking the toilet paper - Keep your extra supply of toilet paper in a place accessible to your kids. Since our little ones tend to use the most paper anyway, assign them the responsibility of restocking the toilet paper on the roll whenever it runs out.
Picking up their bath toys - Parents know that when you have kids, your bathtub easily becomes overwhelmed with toys. Rather than sweeping them all to the back of the tub or gingerly stepping around them when you want to take a shower, kids can handle the chore of picking up their bath toys. Check the store for bath toy storage containers or nets that hang right on the shower wall, and are easy for kids to use.
Folding and hanging towels - Rather than throwing used towels on the floor or sink, entrust your kids with the responsibility of folding and re-hanging towels, or re-stocking the linen closet with fresh, dry ones.
Placing clothes in the laundry hamper - As well as wet towels, kids' clothing often finds a new home on the bathroom floor. Give your children the duty of placing their dirty clothes in the hamper or laundry basket when they take a bath, to keep the bathroom floor somewhat presentable.
Putting away their toiletries - Our bathroom sink used to be littered with toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, body wash, combs and other toiletries. Now, our preschooler makes sure to put away his bathroom items every day in a special basket he can reach.
Wiping the bathroom mirrors - Don't worry, no harsh cleaning chemicals here! Even kids can handle the duty of wiping the bathroom mirrors with vinegar and a little bit of newspaper. Keep vinegar in a small spray bottle and supervise your child until this chore becomes routine.
Even though young kids aren't doing heavy-duty, intense cleaning, assigning them chores in the bathroom is a great way to teach them about responsibility, duty and doing their part in your family. And, of course, it gives us parents slightly less work to do!
