2011 Most Popular Holiday Toy (and the Hardest One to Buy)

What is it about certain holiday toys that drive us to madness? In 1984, people trampled over each other for the last Cabbage Patch Kid. More recently, grown men and women have gone to battle over a red felt doll called Tickle Me Elmo.

Check out more crazy holiday toy fads from years past

It may start out innocently enough, with a good product and a little buzz, but once the "sold out" signs start showing up, the gloves come off. And this year, the battle lines are drawn over the LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer Learning Tablet .

With 14 percent of Americans planning on gifting one of these touch-screen toys this holiday season, the LeapPad has become this year's golden goose. Nobody can stock it in stores fast enough, and online vendors that have it are jacking up the price. The original sticker price for the tablet is around $99, but vendors on eBay and buy.com are putting supply and demand to the test, charging upwards of $190 for the plastic gadget.

One Ohio mom paid $300 from an online vendor after every store in a drivable distance had sold out of the tablet. Other parents are logging onto stores' web forums in hopes of finding insider access to merchandise.

Note the pleas of a desperate mom on the Best Buy forum:
"I've been looking everywhere for this item. I need it for my 5 yr old son. Every day I go to best buy to see when you guys get it. Can you please let me know, because its not even up on your site anymore. Please."

Then came the news from a store employee: All sold out since Black Friday. And the salt in the wounds: "Regrettably, I don't have any information that I can provide regarding any future availability."

Specific dolls (yes you, Elmo) have a special irreplaceable quality under the Christmas tree, but can a kid really tell the difference between the various toy tablets on the market? Definitely, according to Consumer Reports. They had a focus group of kids test the top ones out and an overwhelming majority favored the LeapPad. Essentially an iPad for kids between the ages of 4 through 9, the durable touch-screen gadget comes with a built-in video camera, voice recorder, and a slew of games and apps specific to the brand. For kid purposes, it's almost as good as a Steve Jobs invention, only much harder to get.

While major chain stores like Best Buy and Target are currently sold out of the item, Toys R Us has taken the extreme measure of announcing a restock. "We've had a lot of customers coming in to look for it," Toys R Us representative Bob Friedland told Shine. Come Saturday morning at 6 a.m., 30,000 Leap Pads will return to stores across the country. Parents on a mission may be considering an overnight campout. "It will definitely sell quickly," says Friedland.

I think a lot of parents are getting caught up in hype without reviewing first. Go over to Amazon and check out the reviews. I'm not at all interested in this but out of curiosity I read a bunch. Most only seem to come with 1 actual game/app preloaded (studio story and art studio are educationally worthless and apparently pretty boring). Apps are $7-$25/each and can be beaten in about 30 minutes. The one 'Ultra e-Book' is $20 and there's only 9 other e-books at $7.50/each. Games bought from stores seem to range from $10-$25 so it's going to be a VERY pricey gift if people are spending $200+ for the base unit and then want four or five apps and four or five games. It's slow and difficult to set up, with many reporting between 2-4 hours to get it working and even then a lot report problems and unhelpful tech support. Downloads seem to be slow (which obviously varies depending on your internet connection) but apps seem to be over 100 megs each. Really seems like this is a toy designed to get away from you in terms of cost. A 'little bit' here and a 'little bit there' quickly adds up into hundreds more dollars in games/apps.

Just because it has a touch screen doesn't mean it can't be for kids or it's too advanced. Has everyone forgotten that kids have been playing with DS's since 2004. But anyway, I agree, it's crazy to fight over all these things, and kids need to go outside too.

Me too! Yay us! I was so worried some scandalous employee would get back there and steal it, I went and picked it up earlier than I wanted to. But I was relieved to see it had stayed safe, and my 3 year old son should be happy and quit trying to steal his sisters DS...

Wow, that's unheard of. Here in TX you can't get your hands on one anywhere. Completely sold out.

sounds like you should of bought as many as you could and made some easy money on craigslist. Isn't that the american thing to do? Instead of letting people buy them that want them most times workers snatch them all up then mark them up in price online.

Last year we got our son the leapfrog explorer. I thought about getting this but it just didn't make sense since we have an iPad and he loves getting on Netflix and Playing angry birds and the leapfrog tablet can't do that. So instead I got him some games for the explorer and the Cars 2 Appmates for the iPad. He's gonna love them!

I got the Innotab from the Vtech website for $79. Free Shipping. We let our 4yr old play with both the innotab and leap pad at the store and she prefered the innotab. I love that i can put all her favorite music and movies on there plus the games and learning apps are a great gadget for her to have especially since we take lots of trips. Nice thing i got the car charger to go with it :D. I also love the reading tools on there. When we read together it's fun to watch the animations and helps her understand what we just read!

It's not like your kid wants it anyway. They would rather play with your smartphone or Ipad.

My son has an iPod touch and a Nintendo DSi and would still love to have this!

That is the exact reason I purchased my daughter a LeapPad back in August. I received an email from LeapFrog about it at the end of July & knew she would love it. She loves my iPad but it's too big & at times difficult for her little hands to handle & she doesn't like my DS at all so I'm glad I was smart enough to know this was going to be a hot item.

The other tablet by V Tech may not have a camera, but it allowed you to add videos and has a built in MP3 player. All for 79 bucks and its still available. Its a better product! Get now, while its available.
