    Busiest Cities for the Holidays

    By Colleen Kane, CNBC.com

Despite continuing economic troubles, more Americans are planning to travel this holiday season. According to a new report from AAA, an anticipated 42.5 million will be traveling 50 miles or more, which is 4 percent more than last year.

Palm Springs, CaliforniaPalm Springs, CaliforniaTo find out where the greatest numbers of those Americans will be traveling, Bert Sperling of Sperling's Best Places looked at airline flight statistics from last year. The resulting top 10 busiest cities are those that have the highest percentage of flights during the holidays. However, the list was not determined just by looking at raw numbers. Sperling's team arrived at a list of the 100 largest airline destinations, counting only those flights that ended in each particular city so as not to include transfers.

"The large number of Florida cities in the top spots likely points to holiday travel to visit elderly parents who have retired to that state," Sperling remarked. However, these may not all be ranking due to visiting family members - two tropical cities on the list are probably visited at this time more for vacations.
At the bottom of Sperling's top 100 busiest holiday cites list were (counting from 100-96), Columbia, S.C.; Anchorage, Alaska; Santa Barbara, Calif.; Savannah, Ga.; and Louisville, Ky. Check out the 10 cities that ranked at the top, counting down to number 1.

Fort Myers, FloridaFort Myers, FloridaFort Myers, Florida
    Holiday Rank: 1
    Thanksgiving Rank: 4
    Christmas Rank: 1

There were 32,676 annual flights into southwest Florida's City of Palms in 2010, with 1,150 of those occurring at Thanksgiving and 1,041 at Christmas. Travelers to Fort Myers are likely visiting older relatives who retired in Florida, in such surrounding cities as Cape Coral, Punta Gorda or Naples. But who knows, maybe some percentage of these travelers are big fans of industry and want to visit the summer homes of pals Henry Ford and Thomas Edison, which are both major local tourist destinations.

    Cincinnati, OhioCincinnati, OhioCincinnati, Ohio
    Holiday Rank: 2
    Thanksgiving Rank: 1
    Christmas Rank: 2

In 2010 there were 55,545 annual flights into the Queen City, with 2,010 flights timed for the Thanksgiving holiday and 1,662 at Christmas. Flyers could be visiting relatives in Norwood, Sharonville or Blue Ash, Ohio, or possibly Covington or Edgewood in Kentucky. Those sticking around Cincinnati itself might take in the festival of lights at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanic Garden or the New Nutcracker, among other holiday events and attractions.

    Miami, FloridaMiami, FloridaMiami, Florida
    Holiday Rank: 3
    Thanksgiving Rank: 2
    Christmas Rank: 4

Miami was the destination for 82,172 flights last year, of which 2,956 were at Thanksgiving and 2,414 at Christmas. Miami's white sandy beaches, nightlife and cuisine make it a popular destination in itself, although there may be some family visiting obligations fulfilled by travelers to Miami or nearby cities such as Coral Gables, Pinewood and Westview.

    Hartford, ConnecticutHartford, ConnecticutHartford, Connecticut
    Holiday Rank: 4
    Thanksgiving Rank: 3
    Christmas Rank: 6

Hartford was the destination for 27,992 flights in 2010, of which 990 came at Thanksgiving and 809 at Christmas. Travelers to this airport could be visiting family in nearby cities including Avon, Bristol, Ellington, Middletown or Newington, or venturing a bit further afield to the rural winter wonderland of the Berkshires in western Massachusetts.

Fort Lauderdale, FloridaFort Lauderdale, FloridaFort Lauderdale, Florida
    Holiday Rank: 5
    Thanksgiving Rank: 7
    Christmas Rank: 5

Some 73,355 flights terminated at Fort Lauderdale last year, with 2,560 of those occurring at Thanksgiving and 2,149 at Christmas. I'm a little surprised a "ski" destination isn't included.

New Mexico does have some nice ski areas and great little towns for winter vacations. I use to go there quite often, but haven't been in years. I would love to go back there again during the winter.

Oh one more thing. Over here in the La. area, everyone that comes to visit dont give a da!! about traffic. There are to many places to stop and party till it clears up. But remember. Drink two at a time. One for you and the other for the driver. Happy Holidays.

I bet more people go to Lake Tahoe than to Cincinatti for Christmas. This is a very misleading article. It should have been titled "the busiest airports"
      • Brian G 5 months ago
Or you could learn to read the bit of writing before the list begins to see how the list was determined. And, to prove your general stupidity, why weren't Atlanta, New York, Chicago, etc. on the list if it "should have been titled "the busiest airports""? How can someone be named Newton and be this dense?

No snow in Tahoe right now
      • mark biltin 5 months ago
Being that Lake Tahoe has ZERO INCHES of snow today, who wants to go there.

If the reporter was really going to include hubs in this article, hubs would've been included. When I say hubs I mean: LA, San Francisco, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Chicago, Atlanta, Washington-Dulles, JFK. Compared to these airports and the passenger numbers, Cinci and Miami are nothing.

you are retarded and nobody cares what you have to say. my turds are more interesting than you!
      • Sean 5 months ago
ya your a #$%$ its not talking about airports and fly throughs..its talking about places that are actually visited..STFU and stop acting like you know things
      • Rodd 5 months ago
Hey Sean, if you would've taken the time to read MOST of the other comments, people were saying the only reason Miami and Cincinnati were on there were because they're hubs. You are a complete and total #$%$ that has two brain cells that are both lonely. By the way, it's spelled "yeah" not "ya" as you did! #$%$

All these people from Florida who 'hate' their tourists, we'll take them in Vegas! I love the Holidays in Vegas. I love our tourists too. We have Christmas everywhere. The Springs Preserve in Vegas, Ethel M's cactus garden in Henderson, is decorated in lights, Opportunity Village(Vegas) is amazing w/ a carousel, a mini train ride thru a Christmas tree forest, and a gingerbread house contest. In the spirit of Christmas, at Opportunity village all proceeds are for the benefit of the disabled/ handicapped of our community. There's also Sam's Town (HD) atrium & Bellagio's garden, and they are decorated for Christmas.
I work at Eforea so I might be biased, but I think you shouldn't forget to give the gift of well being. Come to a spa while you're here, to give you & your loved ones a massage, a mud wrap w/ body scrub, or a facial with me, for Christmas. Then hang out for a few more days and party in the New Year! Mandalay Bay had an outside party w/ free parking last year, hope they do it again. You may need some TLC afterward so come the sweat out the the alcohol in the spa steam-room. A facility use pass is usually much cheaper than a massage but use of the spa is usually included in the price of your massage so you can use it the day of your treatment. Hope to see you soon! Happy Holidays where- ever you are. Take Care!

Hartford people are flying in for anyplace in Central/Western Ma, The whole state of CT (Only major airport in the state) Even people going to Albany area of NY. Cincy is for sure just being used as a hub for Delta. Lots & Lots of East to West flights transfers there.

umm... how bout chicago thats really nice!!! and great 4 holidays too!!! :)
    • AllisonR  •  5 months ago
Since Cincy is a hub airport, it's usually the cheapest choice if you are heading to Indianapolis, Columbus, or Louisville. They need to post the ranking for renting cars with the average mileage used from those areas. I can guarantee that 50% of those using the Cincinnati airport are not staying within 25 miles.
    • Marquita  •  5 months ago
why is everyone giving cincinnati such a hard time? have you ever visited there? I've traveled to a lot of cities and Cincinnati would be in my top 5. CINCINNATI! CINCINNATI! CINCINNATI! :-)
    • MichelleB  •  5 months ago
My favorite is Washington DC. For the turkeys fly home. Almost politicans they need to stay there since they seem to just sleep and do nothing in DC.
    • Melissa  •  Utica, New York  •  5 months ago
What about all the people who drive? I have driven to NYC for the past four years during the holidays, guess that is not counted in the data.
    • Will  •  Longmont, Colorado  •  5 months ago
