Of the many dilemmas that come with choosing a preschool, the question of schedules is one of the most vexing. You may know what kind of philosophy or community you prefer, and everyone has an ideal location in mind, but schedule? What is the optimal preschool schedule for a two-year-old, a three-year-old, a pre-kindergartner? And what is the ideal schedule for their parents? No one seems to agree on any of this. Read More »

But, as is the case with so many things in life, what you see may not be what you get. So, think of the tour as an opportunity to scratch below the surface -- to get a true feel of the school. You can best do that by coming prepared with questions that will help you determine whether the school is the type of environment that will be a good fit for you and your child. While not every parent has the same set of concerns, there are a few key issues that can help you distinguish among schools and, hopefully, identify the school that is right for your family. Let’s start by acknowledging that in many places, the very idea of a “preschool application” is a foreign concept. You find out about a couple of good preschools nearby, give a call or drop by, get your child signed up, and there you have it. Doesn’t that sound great? Sadly, such a simple process could not be farther from the reality in many urban areas. In cities across the country, vast numbers of small children apply for too few spots at popular preschool programs. We all wish it were not so, but we must cope with the fact that the wonderful nursery school down the street may be flooded with more applications than its staff has time to read. Fretting about what to major in now that college is quickly approaching? Check out Seventeen's Q&A on the subject!
Q: "I'm having trouble choosing a major! I have a lot of different interests and I'm scared of committing to just one. What's the best way to choose?" --Katie, 18, Panama, FL
A: Choosing a major can be overwhelming when there are so many interesting fields of study — it’s hard to narrow it down to just one! One of the things I find really helpful when I’m having a tough time making decisions is to make lists of pros and cons. So write down each of the majors that interest you, and under each one list what you like and don’t like about it, as well as the possible careers you might like to pursue. You may want to consider which majors will best prepare you for the job you want to get out of college. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (1) | Blog

Recently I canceled my old page and opened a new one, and am still in the process of adding everyone who was on my old account (I have great friends; over 30 people from my old account have found me, and have added me as a friend).
I had to do this because one of my friends who is a radio talk show host got his account hacked and the hackers sent phishing emails to several people on his friends list, including me. I was not sure how much of my privacy was at risk, so I closed my old one and opened a new one.
So this got me to wondering just how safe is Facebook to use? How much of a risk is there to users to getting their account hacked, their identity stolen, and their futures ruined? I did some research, and learned a few things.
