    With the gift giving season beginning its approach, I am vaguely considering getting a jump start on the usual shopping it requires. But I have a confession to make. I already know that I am planning to buy my boys some fancy new Legos this year. Sure, there's certainly nothing unusual about buying your sons Legos. I expect many Legos will find themselves wrapped up and waiting beneath all sorts of decorated trees in a few months. But it's why I am buying them Legos that deserves the confession.     Numbers abound in preschool-land, and our kiddos get cozy with them early and often. English is plenty prickly in both written and spoken forms, but the language of counting is the real Esperanto, and even very young children are remarkably fluent. We so adore the glinting-eyed exclamations of "I love math!" when a preschooler first counts to 20. And we treasure the serious concentration that chugs along to the a-ha revelation when she figures out that two plus three equals five. Read More »
