When I read the story all over the news today about the mother arrested and being charged with criminal neglect because her 14-year old son weighs 555 pounds, my heart sank. But I didn't know what to say or even think about the whole situation.

When the moment came for my son to eat food -- real food, not breastmilk and not that goopy rice cereal stuff -- I overhauled almost all the food in my kitchen pantry and refrigerator. Clearly, it wasn't that he was at risk for getting Doritos and Diet Coke at 6 months old. But I was bound and determined to give him the best food I could give him. For me, that meant making my own baby food from scratch. It also meant that I needed to make sure my own diet was healthier. A report out of London yesterday showed that some British baby foods have as much sugar and saturated fat as junk food.
