Since there can never be enough reminders that not all "free" annual credit reports are truly no-strings-attached and free, take some time to check out this New York Times article on how tricky it can be for consumers to figure out when they may be duped into paying for an credit-monitoring service most us will never need.
We told you about those cute-jingle commercials with twenty-somethings strumming about their credit woes and singing that all would be good if only they had gone to that website which starts with the word free. All financial advice leads to our credit scores, and the need to check them out at least once a year and tend to mistakes and repairs to our credit history. Credit scores have never been more important as credit has dried up for most borrowers during this economic crisis. So guarding our score should be top of our financial to-do list.

I always point to AnnualCreditReport.com as the go-to place to view credit reports for free, but it’s got some competition from companies that use the word "free" a little too freely, and entice with funny jingles on TV commercials.
