An industrial-chic alternative to curtain rods. I purchased these rods at the local hardware store for under ten dollars each. 9 ways to establish a creative space
Even if you don't have a lot of extra room it's possible to set aside some creative space in your home. Once this area is functional, chances are you'll find it a lot easier to work on your creative projects. dominomag.com associate editor and novelist Amy Shearn shares her tips.

As Virginia Woolf famously wrote, "a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction." Well, we can't help you with the money part, but if you intend on doing anything creative, it's possible—nay, crucial— to create a room of your own (even if it's just part of a room). When I was writing my novel, I was lucky enough to have a little closet-like room to set aside as my office space. No matter how chaotic my Brooklyn apartment (and life) got, my writing room could remain an organized, peaceful bastion. I'm superstitious enough to believe that the good vibes in this room made the novel possible.

5 handsome curtain panels for $50 or less (yes, for the pair)
You know how sometimes you go shopping for shoes, and you get excited when you find a great style that's affordable, and then you realize the price is only for one shoe? Oh, you don't? Then why the heck does this always happen with curtains? Even on packages with a product photo showing two of them? Because I find this so offensive, I decided to round up an assortment of panels priced low enough that you can buy a set for what you'd normally pay for one. Let's all use our imaginations together and not judge these picks on the room sets they're photographed in; it's just not a fair competition.

Top ten decorator tricks
-
- 1. Invest in the best
- Instead of filling a room quickly with things you can afford, enjoy the process and slowly add pieces you absolutely love.
- 2. Borrow your own clothes
- If you love the hue of a blouse (or anything smooth-textured), bring it to a paint store to be scanned and reproduced.
- 3. Lighten up
- Reflective, sparkly fabrics and wallpapers draw light into any space.
- 4. Work with what you've got
- Play up a room's assets. If it has high ceilings, put up really tall curtains. If it's a dark box, don't try to alter it—painting it bright white will only make it seem dingy; instead, go for cozy.
