Tonight, I'll be accepting an award from the Newswomen's Club of New York for a story SELF ran last May, called The Disorder Next Door. While it's exciting to get the kudos, it's especially gratifying to see the media shine a light on an issue that affects millions of women: disordered eating. Read More »

Model Jessica Clark is opening up about her eating disorders--and how she came out on the other side
Some of you may remember my blog entry months ago about wanting to make friends at the gym. Slowly, though, that belief dissipated, and I’ve since made a group of friends I adore and really connect with—further proof that my theory that I didn’t belong in a gym was ludicrous. One of those new friends is Jessica Clark. Yes, she’s a big-time model. Yes, she’s the girl from Usher’s “Let it Burn” video, and that’s her gorgeous photo below from the September issue of Lucky. And yes, she has battled eating disorders. Her story (and her courage to talk so openly about it) really inspired me—and I hope it’ll do the same for you. Read More »

And, like anyone in a recovery program (mine being self-created) it's natural to fall back into... Read More »

We've talked a lot about eating disorders in the past and usually in reference to women, but as society places more attention on physical appearance of either gender, more males are developing disordered eating and full-blown eating disorders. This manorexia is a bitter little secret for most... Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (9) | Blog

Ever since the release of Wii Fit, I've been kind of interested in trying it. Even though it traumatized the heck out of a 10-year-old, I still wanted to check it out. I mean, as a 7-year-old, I was traumatized by gym class, and I don't blame volleyball, you know? And standing on the balance... Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (7) | Blog

I have put a lot of thought and effort into distancing myself from my patterns of disordered eating, consciously reminding myself that food is just nutrition and not nurturing or a reward or something to feel guilty about. Just like a recovering alcoholic will always be an alcoholic, I know that... Read More »

Over the weekend a couple of people said, "I saw you on TV!" Now, that usually would be a simple exchange, but this past Friday I happened to be on two different networks, on two very different topics. I had taped The View the day before and we did a very upbeat and high-energy segment... Read More »

Is it that I've been under a rock, sleeping off ding-dong comas, so I've only just magically become aware of the insane prevalence of eating disorders? Or is it that we're finally becoming more aware of how many people suffer from damaged relationships with their bodies and food, and... Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (0) | Blog

Anorexic behavior, binge eating, obsessive compulsive behaviors, extreme exercising, purging, abusing diet pills and laxatives--it sounds like a summary of the shameful secrets of characters on Gossip Girl or Desperate Housewives, not life as usual for 65 percent of American women. And yet, so it... Read More »
