There was a time in the not so distant past where I was one of those "non-TV" people. You know, the folks you meet and, when you crack a joke from last night's The Office, you're met with that blank and slightly superior stare. "Oh, I don't own a television," they'll pronounce, as if the 20 inch box is some kind of a nefarious antisocial crutch.
These days, however, TV has definitely got me in its Entertaining Ourselves to Death clutches. But, honestly, I couldn't be happier. In our house, television programming is a source of dedication and serious glee. We follow some shows with the intense discipline one should reserve for say, quitting smoking or working out (this discipline is best witnessed in our gnawing dedication to season after season of Lost).
The problem for the tube fanatic is the summer—when the TV season hiatus is turned up and the original programming is turned down, what is a serious television addict to do?
I'll tell you what: RENT TV DVDs. Rent them and watch them obsessively. Seriously, like 3 to 4 episodes per evening. Rent the things you always wished you'd seen, but have somehow missed. Rent the seasons when you were too involved in real life to pay attention. Just rent. And then watch. And stay a TV junkie. It's all awesome.
