Because I am not a runner and because the treadmill just isn't the place to gossip with your girlfriends at the Incline Level 4 setting, I've done a lot of walking. I've walked through, around, by and back through my neighborhood so many times, I swear I know when some shrubs have an extra bloom and exactly what time everyday certain neighbors collect their papers.
Most of my walking has been solitary. Since I work from home and since walking is also a bit of a break from the intensity of making soy butter sandwiches and playing Candy Land with my son, taking any half-hour opportunity to be silent and move my body has been worth lacing up my shoes. But yesterday, I sat at my desk and watched two women with dogs, walking briskly and talking all the way down the block and it gave me a little pang for a walking partner.
Taking the leap into a walking partner relationship can feel risky. It sounds silly but if this time is your only time to yourself, it can be a lot to let someone see you in your spandex or even share the sidewalk with a buddy. Clearly, you want to come up with a list of people who you can approach about walking with you, being sure to only seriously consider those you feel are safe to be around, healthy for your spirit and who can realistically make walking dates with you.
