For some women, going grey is
a natural and beautiful part of the aging process. For others, the
disappearance of hair pigment means spending lots of dough on hair
dye or more frequent trips to the salon. If you fall into the
second category, prepare to have your mind blown. Cosmetics

My recipe for the perfect evening in: large bowl of popcorn, glass of Pinot Grigio (don't mock, it goes quite well with Orville Redenbacher), and a line-up of makeover-themed TV shows in my TiVo. Don't ask me why, I just love, love makeover shows -- makeover anything really. And of course, my favorite part is comparing the befores and afters.
Awhile back, I was lucky enough to get my own makeover, and it was a total blast. So I know the women below must have had a ton of fun getting their hair color makeovers. But even if you're not before and after obsessed like I am, you should still check out these hair color tips -- because we could all use a little change now and then, couldn't we?

Being a beauty editor, you would think that my hair would be in excellent shape, right? Ehh, wrong! Actually, a job that necessitates frequent hairstyling, not to mention hair coloring and my sun addiction (which flies in the face of all sane beauty advice, I know) has left my hair in pretty rough shape.
What about you? Are you giving your hair the TLC it needs or are you slacking a bit? This quiz below will help you figure it out -- and give you ideas on how to fix up your poor battered mane. Check out the questions below, click on any to answer then see where your hair stands.

It's the beauty norm that when the Fall season starts to creep in, many ditch the Summer highlights and lighter hues for darker shades in an attempt to revert and restore our hair's condition from Summer's damage. Think of it as an instinctual hair-rehab of sorts, or pretty much a good ol' guilt trip that you end up with when you realize that most of your hair is now sitting in your bathroom sink. So are you changing your hair color with the season? Read on! Read More »

This week I managed to get a wild hair up my a** and decided to dye my platinum locks black. At home. The first box left my tips looking gray so I put on another kit. Now I'm a Raven. My question to my fellow shine users is this: What products work for dyed dark hair? (and to embellish this) I… Read More »

After talking DIY haircut tales of terror last week, naturally, we started thinking about other beauty disasters we’ve suffered, and hair color mishaps topped the list. Personally, I’ve endured them all. There were various Sun-In incidents (and yes, I went from brassy orange to green on that trip), cranberry juice-fueled binges, at-home highlights (do not attempt at home!), henna, the time black did not look as cool as I thought it would, bleached blonde (also not as rad as in theory), and a million and one crazy-looking streaks in between. But there’s nothing so seductive as the pretty model with perfect hair on the front of that cardboard box filled with promise, even though we now realize, in this age of the airbrushing revolution, that her ‘do is as fake as the dye itself. For the past few years I’ve sworn off coloring my own hair, but as every professional colorist I’ve ever interviewed has asserted, color correction is their bread and butter. After the jump, real women share their own experiences with hair color gone horribly wrong. Read More »

A while back, I got to sit in on a commercial shoot for Clairol Nice 'n Easy starring Angela Kinsey (she plays Angela on "The Office," my fave show, btw). If you haven't seen the ads, Angela plays Gigi, a guardian girlfriend that helps women improve their looks -- and their hair color, naturally (if you're looking for some hair color improvement, check out these expert tips).
I managed to snag Angela for a few minutes between takes, and while she wouldn't spill what happens next season on "The Office," she did share some beauty tips and her favorite products: Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (0) | Blog

I had a pretty drastic haircut today; it was several inches below my shoulders and I got it cut in a layered bob that barely grazes my chin area. I was looking forward to my new look; my boyfriend, not so much. He said, "You should keep it long; I don't like hair that short." I said,… Read More »

I'm a born 'n' raised California girl, so naturally I think my state has the best hair (although considering Cali had towns on both the best hair cities and worst hair cities lists, that's probably open to debate).
Do you think your state has the best hair? Or more specifically, the best hair color? Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (1) | Blog
