What do YOU want to know about Fashion Week?
Readers, let's talk about something. You may heard that New York Fashion Week begins this Friday. And I will be attending.
Now, listen. I have all sorts of mixed feelings about this. I mean, for one, in this economic climate, the entire concept of parading $5,000 bags and $1,495 tops in front of a captive audience of rich people and celebrities seems a little ludicrous.
But, even before 2008--as much as I love style and putting clothes together in creative ways--I've always felt that the high fashion industry is a more than a little alienating and weird. It's so out of reach for most of us that it seems, at its best, like an intriguing fantasy and artistic spectacle; but at its worst, like an obscene indulgence that propagates a poor and shallow image of what women should be (super-thin, obsessed with clothes, financially irresponsible, etc). On the most basic level, the fashion industry says You Are Not OK As You Are and You Must Buy New Stuff.
But this is a fashion blog, obviously, and Fashion Week is fashion news. Beyond that, there's definitely an element of excitement that surrounds top designers and the creativity and innovation they bring to new collections (let's face it, this is essentially why we watch Project Runway).

EBay 101: How to find authentic, big-name designer items
Buying big-name designer stuff on eBay can trip up the best of us. From my years shopping the site I own several "Mock Jacobs" dresses, and my friend has a pair of boots that we refer to as "Faux-é" instead of Chloé (these except totally fake). It happens, and—depending on how much you care and how much effort you're willing to put in—it can happen often. Read More »

Please Hammer, don't hurt em
The first time I spotted the second pair of skinny skinny jeans in the field, I uttered "No no noooooooo" under my breath. There's nothing more sickening than the realization that something awful is about to happen in the world and you are utterly helpless, unable to stop it. Waisters,... Read More »

True-life confessions: What's your worst eBay purchase ever?
People often ask me about my eBay habit, and what they basically want to know is how to foolproof the buying from an online auction process. Like "How do you know it will fit?" (Answer: Use a measuring tape), or "How do you know what to search for?" (Answer: Spend an embarrassing amount of time on the site), or "How can you trust people to send you stuff?" (Answer: You can't.) But the truth is, even though I shop and write about it a lot, I still make tons of mistakes on eBay. Read More »

On sale right now: 3 great pairs of shoes and other cute stuff
I've been walking around today just feeling super stoked about spring and watching women look unbelievably excellent in their spring clothes. Of course, it makes me want to buy new things in a hungry, crazed, wolf-like way that is a little unseemly. But maybe it's not if the stuff is on sale?
After the jump, a bunch of good (reduced price) items I really want and maybe you will too. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (8) | Blog
