Madonna's 50th birthday this week not only freaked me out a little (how
is she possibly 50?) but also made me reflect upon how long she and I
have been together. She was seriously the entertainer of my youth:
There was the terrible airbrushed "Borderline"
sweatshirt period, the
time I won the "True Blue" framed poster on the boardwalk, and the
worst tragedy of all: the moment when I dressed up like Ms.
Ciccone—complete with crucifixes, perm,
lace socks in the
hair, and
braces—lip-synched into a Lysol can to "Like a Virgin," and made my dad
tape the whole thing (there was a even a jump at the end!).
