The news is not good in the news biz. The steady beat of people losing their beats on newspapers, which are shutting down or downsizing in a big way is getting louder every day. This week, Hearst's Seattle Post-Intelligencer announced it will go to a Web-only edition. That's good news, when you consider the plight of other papers, like the Rocky Mountain News, which shut down just before reaching its 150th anniversary. But take a closer look and the news is still unsettling: The online version has a staff of about 20, compared with the paper's 165, and will be a mix of mostly commentary, advice and links to other news sites--as well as "some" original reporting.

As someone with her roots deeply planted in newspapers, I worry about what we are losing. And I'm not just talking about the ability to hold a paper in our hands and turn the pages and do a crossword puzzle anywhere we want. It's the loss of smart staff to look behind the obvious into how local governments and schools decide how to spend our money, to ask good questions, to read public record reports.
