We have all experienced some degree of dry
mouth. Normal dry mouth commonly occurs in the morning when we wake
as our saliva flow decreases when we sleep.
Saliva is produced by 3 main salivary glands and many minor
salivary glands that are scattered throughout the mouth. Dry mouth
occurs when these glands do not function properly.
There are different ways to treat
dry mouth
problem. If dryness is due to medication, it may be
possible for your doctor to advise you to switch to another “less
drying” medication. If the dryness is due to a specific disease,
like diabetes, proper treatment of the disease will decrease the
intensity of your oral symptoms.
To relieve dry mouth here are some helpful guidelines:
1. Keep Your Mouth Moist by sipping water frequently -
You can carry a water bottle, during the day and keep a glass of
water at your bedside at night.
2. Eat foods which require chewing - this will stimulate the flow
of saliva, chewing Sugar-Free Gum, Sweetened with
Xylitol also
helps.
3. Decrease your intake of sugars. Also, watch your intake of
carbohydrates, like bread, pasta and cookies, etc. which tend to
stick around in the mouth.
4. Avoid or decrease your intake of alcohol - Use
alcohol-free Mouthwash , alcohol tends to dry the mouth.
5.
Saliva Stimulating Mints or a
mouth-gel can be used to lubricate your mouth tissues. They
provide relief and moisturize mouth.
6. Use
non-foaming toothpaste , foaming toothpaste contains drying
SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate)
7. Choose
Xylitol-based oral moisturizers, in gums, mints or pure
granules. Clinical studies show that xylitol encourages flow of
saliva, creates neutral mouth environment(pH 7.0), and can prevent
fungal infections.
