Today, I am having my first mammogram. Although I write about a lot of personal things, I didn't really intend to tell all of the interwebs that I am about to have some really high-tech, expensive portraits of my breasts taken this afternoon. The American College of Physicians now believes that all patients over the age of 13 should be routinely screened for HIV, in part because most people do not tell their doctor about their risky behaviors. For this reason and because a significant percentage of people are unaware they are already infected with the disease, the group that represents internists is upping the previous recommendations of who should be screened and how often. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more than 1 million cases diagnosed annually across the country. Skin cancer is also the most preventable and curable form of cancer if it is detected early. This kick-off is the first stop of the tour, which will visit more than 50 cities at 100 different locations across the country to educate people about the importance of an annual skin check with their doctor, and get the message out that it is crucial for everyone, no matter their skin color, to practice sun safety. More than 10,000 people are expected to be screened during the entire tour.
