I like Fall. I like the change in the colors of the leaves, apple orchards, Halloween, and getting to wear my favorite cozy sweater. What do I dislike? Turning pasty white again. Even though I wear my fair share of SPF, there is still a Summer glow that I get from being outside in the sun. Not…

Everyone looks better with a tan. I forgot how much of a difference it can make! I pulled out a bottle of self tanner today that I must have bought 2 or 3 years ago because I really don't remember having ever taken the time and effort to apply self tanner since I became a mom 2 years ago. After my fake tan was complete, I looked in the mirror and I felt like a younger version of myself again. My hair looked lighter and my teeth looked whiter. When my husband got home, he instantly commented on how great I looked and he was like, "what did you do? Something is different! Did you get your hair highlighted while I was gone? It looks lighter". Read More »

My guy friend said his skin was blinding pasty, and he needed to do something about it before hitting the beach. Putting my beauty-editor hat on, I suggested he try one of these self tanners (since no self-respecting beauty editor would recommend tanning in the sun or a booth -- the damage!).
Unfortunately, my suggestion was met with a burst of laughter and a claim that he'd "rather fry in the sun than use that stuff." Why? "Because if I did it wrong and you could see orange streaks, then people would know."
While images of these tangerine-hued celebs came to mind, I still tried to assure him that with these foolproof tips, it's totally possible to use self tanner without anyone suspecting. Sadly, I was unable to convince him. Taking off the beauty-editor hat, I realized maybe it is just too weird.
What do you think? Is it OK for guys to use self tanner or should we mock these artificially bronzed specimens? Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (5) | Blog

Lindsay Lohan, she of leggings fame and (most recently) looking way too skinny, has teamed up with tanning expert Lorit to create a new product called Sevin Nyne Tanning Mist which will be available at Sephora.com starting April15.

Though, from the image from the ad campaign (left), it appears as if LL's new tanner will render your skin that standard-issue Soul Man shade, kind of carrot, with a touch of glitter. However, the actress/singer claims... Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (19) | Blog

If you've ever had a self tanner mishap (orange streaks ring a bell much?), then you might have sworn off trying to alter your skin color for life. Then again, if you've ever had an A1 totally successful experience made in self tanning heaven, you know that a golden hue does make your skin look perfectly even toned and maybe even just a little bit Sophia Loren-esque, just a little. Are you planning on wearing shorts/a skirt/a bathing suit/exposing any flesh this weekend? I am. And quite frankly, I feel scared. My skin is WHITE. Not like pretty, ivory Nicole Kidman white. No, we're dealing with Philip Seymour Hoffman pale-with-blotchy-specks-of-red-fire white. It is not, in a word, hot. And I know, I should be all "love yourself for who you are", "who cares about pasty legs, we're at war." But instead, I just want to use a bit of fast, non-streaky self-tanner and look a teeny tiny bit bronze. Sue me.
I've rounded up some quick-fix products below. All I've used myself or have come on very good recommendations (oh and for best results your legs should be shaved and your skin exfoliated first)... Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (20) | Blog

As much as I have been a lifelong fan of Clinique, it is with a heavy heart that I must report that while I've been trying to adore their Self-Sun Touch of Bronze Moisturizing Body Lotion, it has fallen short of my expectations. One word: streaking (and I'm not talking about Will Ferrell in... Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (2) | Blog

Normally I wouldn't cover something just because a publicist sent it to me, but I have an insane crush on Jergens, particularly its new Natural Glow Express moisturizer/self-tanner. I started trying it about a month ago and it is sooo good—it made my super-pasty winter-in-New-York legs actually look like I'd been to the beach for a week. Even my male best friend, a serious tan person, has been using it instead of going to the tanning bed (a horrible habit, he knows).
Anyway, Kristen Bell, she of Veronica Mars and the new movie that I've seen everywhere (and it's not even out for another week), Forgetting Sarah Marshall, has teamed up with Jergens and The Skin Cancer Foundation for a campaign about the dangers of being a tanorexic. It's oddly called “Glow in the Dark,” which means, I think, that you don't need to fry yourself in order to have a healthy glow. Bell has pledged to “Glow in the Dark” this summer, use tons of SPF protection and not sun. If you join her... Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (5) | Blog
