Marathon Training Blog: No Distractions -- I'm in Training!
There are two things that used to distract me while running—so much so, that if one of these factors was off, I'd turn around after a block or two and head home. The first? Headphones. I tried countless times to get those cute little earbuds to fit snugly and stay in my ears. Inevitably though, one of those suckers would pop out and I'd have to slow down to maneuver it back in. Fitness Class of the Month: Kranking
I love what biking does for my butt and thighs, so I was curious to see what Kranking ® would do for my upper body. The workout, designed by Johnny G, who founded the Spinning ® indoor cycling program, is best described as cycling for your arms and it's being rolled out at gyms across the country. I arrived at the 30-minute class at Reebok Sports Club/NY to find a room of curious-looking "bikes" that have hand-pedals where you would normally find handlebars. They power a suspended flywheel, much like you find on a group cycling bike—except these are much curvier and fun looking. Read More »

Healthy Entertaining: Nutrition Parties
On the second Wednesday of each month, Lauren Gray meets up to 12 friends for dinner. This isn't your typical girls' night out at a restaurant. Instead, the women have started a dinner club. The first meetings were casual; Lauren's friend Melissa Clough would invite gal pals over for a meal and gabfest on her husband's poker night. But it soon morphed into a not-to-be-missed tradition that now, three years later, is known as Fancy Dinner Night. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (0) | Blog

Dating and Your Diet
An exciting romance can be good for your happiness level, but bad for your waistline. According to an Obesity Society study, women who were dating put on an average of 15 pounds over five years, those who were living with a romantic partner gained 18 pounds and the newly married packed on 24 pounds. You spend the most time with your loved one, so you're bound to be influenced by his eating habits, says Lauren Antonucci, M.S., R.D., director of New York City-based Nutrition Energy. This can lead to weight gain since women generally don't need as many calories as men. Here are simple solutions for solving these dating dilemmas. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (0) | Blog

Marathon Training Blog: Where to Run?
I'm in awe of people who can run on a treadmill for hours at a time. Personally, I get bored after 20 minutes. I've always preferred to train outside—even if it means sweating out a summer heat wave or donning half a dozen layers in the winter—because it offers a wonderful change of scenery. Regardless of whether you're sprinting through a forest or a concrete jungle, there's always something interesting to look at; this is especially true where I live in New York City. Read More »

Marathon Training Blog: Eat Like An Athlete
On a recent scorcher of a day, I ran one
of my hardest races ever. At 8 a.m. it was hazy and 79 degrees with 65 percent humidity. It's just four miles, I thought as I stood at the starting line, and with my mom in the crowd cheering me on, maybe I can break the pace I've been hovering around. I was about to discover that a short race in heat-wave conditions can be more brutal than a long race in cooler temps. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (0) | Blog

Marathon Training Blog: Lessons in Cross-Training
I remember feeling so good after running the Los Angeles marathon back in 2004 that I attended a victory party and impressed the guests by spending all night on my feet socializing. This was in sharp contrast to the day after Boston when I coated myself with Bengay and considered skipping class so I didn't have to drag myself up and down the stairs. Following Vancouver, I had to sit on a plane for four hours, and by the time I got home my legs barely worked. To what do I attribute the vast differences in my post-race condition? Cross-training!
