Ah, the menorah has been put away, the tree is on the curb, and all that remains of the gift-giving portion of the holidays is everyone's favorite pastime: the Thank You Cards. Like many parents of a toddler, I used to approach thank-you notes pragmatically. I wrote ostensibly in my toddler's voice -- "Thank you for that bath towel! I use it every day!" -- and if her mood allowed, she would decorate the card with stickers or scribbles. Then, one day, inspiration struck: why not let Fern dictate her own thank-you notes? We already take dictation from her for stories -- that's a tried-and-true preschool activity -- so it's astounding that the idea of using the same trick for actual correspondence didn't come to me sooner.
