Rally around five favorite tailgating cookbooks
Tailgating used to be something that only football fans did. Nowadays, you can find people cooking up a storm, sharing good food and drinks with friends and fellow fans in the parking lots of various venues -- sporting and otherwise -- across the country: Sanford Stadium (Georgia Dawgs), Kauffman Stadium (Kansas City Royals), the New Hampshire Speedway (NASCAR), and yes, even the season's opening night at the Santa Fe Opera. While the origin of tailgating, a Princeton–Rutgers football game in 1869, is debatable, it is nearly impossible to challenge the practice's appeal. Read More »

How to keep track of all your nutrition info
I've visited sites that tell me how many calories are in an apple. That's useful but limited. What if I need the information about two apples and I'm bad at math? What if I want to specify it's a small apple? Or a really large one? More important, I tend to give up trying to track my nutrition because I hate typing in so many keywords (apple, banana, Total cereal, coffee, etc.). Poaching eggs is everything it's cracked up to be
Poaching eggs is something I've always left to the chefs. Just give me my eggs Florentine and my frisee salad and I can be very happy. I've tried poaching at home the true French way by immersing the egg and swirling it gently through the water. Most often I end up with something akin to egg drop soup. Read More »

Delicious: Couldn't-live-without kitchen gadgets
Alton Brown says that everything in the kitchen should be a multitasker--every gadget that takes up counter space or drawer space should pay for its real estate and then some, in many useful ways. I say forget that; if it's a gadget that you use all the time, and it makes your kitchen time easier, faster, better, more fun, then that sucker should take up just as much room as it needs to take up. It becomes not clutter, but indispensable.

Nine essential grilling tools
Tongs
You can do 90 percent of your grilling work with tongs alone. Look for ones made of heavy-duty stainless steel (aluminum versions aren't as sturdy) with a scalloped or oval tip, which makes it easier to grip and hold food. Medium-length tongs (about 12 inches) provide maximum control while keeping your hands far enough away from the fire to not get singed. Tongs should have a soft, comfortable grip. Those with a locking mechanism are the easiest to store. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (0) | Blog
