The one grunge style I can get behind: Dark floral dresses
I know I've talked about this a lot here, but bear with me: I still want a vintage floral dress. Only this time I want one that's fitted, darker, and more—I absolutely cannot believe I'm about to say this—grunge. Pieces like this, this, and this, where the dense prints are almost an afterthought, and the emphasis is on the contrast of sweet flowers in an otherwise dark outfit.

America's Best Salvage Shops
When it comes to houses, they rarely make them like they used to. Which is a good reason to turn to architectural salvage shops when a room is begging for some character-building trim, a hand-carved mantel, a pedestal sink, or an Old World chandelier. Use our guide to start your search... Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (1) | Blog

Feeding My Inner Luddite
As much as I love the
massive editing and Internet sharing that can be done with digital
cameras, I miss the happy mistakes that occur with old-school,
developed-at-the-Photomat film. I also very much miss actually
seeing pictures, which everyone always says they're going to print
but never do....

Connect the Dots
Lately my favorite garment treatment on anything has been the Swiss dot technique, where little polka dots are sewn onto (often sheer) fabric creating a girly/pretty relief-map effect. Seriously this is one of the most feminine-without-being-cloying embellishments I've ever seen on clothes. It's elegant and sophisticated, but still fun. Check out all the cool Swiss dot pieces I found on eBay: Read More »

True Blue Baby I Love You
Madonna's 50th birthday this week not only freaked me out a little (how is she possibly 50?) but also made me reflect upon how long she and I have been together. She was seriously the entertainer of my youth: There was the terrible airbrushed "Borderline" sweatshirt period, the time I won the "True Blue" framed poster on the boardwalk, and the worst tragedy of all: the moment when I dressed up like Ms. Ciccone—complete with crucifixes, perm, lace socks in the hair, and braces—lip-synched into a Lysol can to "Like a Virgin," and made my dad tape the whole thing (there was a even a jump at the end!). On the Hunt for...Ferragamo Heels
I'm not much of a stilettos girl (for the accident prone, they're way risky), but I do like a little height now and again. The problem for me with heels is they're usually either too skinny and wobbly or so chunky as to look Frankensteinish against my freakishly small ankles. That's where Ferragamo comes in. I bought several pairs of its vintage pumps a few years ago, and I fell in love.

How to find a great vintage clutch on eBay
I know I've written about vintage clutches before, but I might as well admit that they're a bit of a sick obsession of mine. Do you know why? Well, they're cheap, for one thing. At around $15 a pop, they're less than many of us (not me, but still) spend on lip gloss. They're also capable of actually making your outfit dressier or cooler, depending on the style.
