It seems like a lifetime ago, but it was really just ten years ago when I stood in front of a university classroom teaching college students who were mostly just hoping to get an easy A (ha! suckers!) by taking a Women Studies course. My areas of research specialty were ending violence against women, portrayals of women in the media, and a slew of topics that fell under women's sexual health and spiritual well-being. Since then, I've traded my combat boots in for platform peep toes, my blackboard for a blog, and my lecture notes for the New York Times online.

Connie Culp, our country's first face transplant recipient, stepped up to the podium and began to speak. As she slowly began to credit her doctors and the family who donated skin cells that made her transplant possible, I couldn't take my eyes off of the woman on my television screen.

By dragging a dead-looking, underwear-clad model across the roof of a fancy car? There's really no explanation for this. It's not cool. It's not edgy. It does not make us want any man we know to wear that creepy guy's outfit. It is instead an insulting, disrespectful, and outrageously degrading image that overtly promotes violence against women.

Having a guy shout, "I like
the way your tits bounce when you run" as I ran past is one of the
more offensive forms of street harassment I've experienced. This
incident happened during college, a time when I was also frequently
the recipient of whistles, honks, and comments from men passing by
in...
