    7 Worst Roads in America

    By Michelle Crouch

Dreaded, dreadful, deadly. Which states and roads do truck drivers, traffic reporters, and other experts complain about? Also, see our picks for the 5 Best Roads in America.

    Plus: View Our Methodology

    1. I-55 in Louisiana
"The second you cross the Mississippi state line into Louisiana heading south, it's like driving on a washboard. You can close your eyes and know. I had a cup full of soda one day, and the road literally rattled it right out of the drink holder and all over the floor of my truck. God help you if you think you're going to play a CD going down there." - Trucker Kevin Johnson, Rushville, Illinois

    2. I-12 east of Baton Rouge
"It's one of our deadliest stretches of highways because it goes from six lanes down to four lanes. They're widening it now, but just another two exits because they don't have the dollars to finish. So that will just carry the problem farther down the road." - Jennifer Marusak, communications director for Driving Louisiana Forward, a campaign committed to improving Louisiana's highway infrastructure

    Louisiana roads in general
"The local paper published a picture of a guy who, to make a point, set a mattress down inside a pothole and was taking a nap." - Ray Romero, New Orleans traffic reporter

    3. I-15 in California (from Barstow to the Nevada state line)
"It's hilly, and the road has a lot of high and low spots. But the real problem is that it's always so heavy with traffic, and you've got gamblers heading to Vegas who are thinking, The buffet in Vegas closes at ten o'clock. I gotta get there. If you hit it on a Friday night? Forget about it. You're out in the middle of the desert and you get to the top of one of the hills, and as far as you can see it's just a string of brake lights." - Trucker Matt Boose, Eudora, Kansas

    4. I-79/I-70 interchange in Pennsylvania
"If you're going north on 79 and you need to go west on 70, the ramp is U-shaped. You've got to slow down to 25 to get around this crazy U. There is a wall around it that is just beat to pieces where people have banged into it." - Trucker Clarence Jenkins, Charleston, West Virginia

    5. The Pennsylvania Turnpike, I-78 and I-80 in Pennsylvania
"Vehicles have gotten wider and bigger since these roads were built, and they're still very narrow. They've also got a lot of hills and curves, and people are always crossing over into the other lane when they go around a curve. Plus, their on-ramps are very short, and there's not enough time for people to get up to highway speed. So you end up with lots of people running into the back of slow-moving vehicles as they're getting off a ramp … It seems like they've been under construction forever. We like to say they have two seasons in Pennsylvania: winter and construction." - Trucker Frank Silio, Miami

    6. I-95 over the George Washington Bridge, New Jersey/New York
Truck drivers hate this two-level bridge so much that they will drive 30 or 40 miles out of their way to avoid it. In addition to some of the worst gridlock in the country, it's got potholes galore. Then there are the drivers. "You can sit there with your signal on all day, and nobody will let you over. So you've got to 'take the lane.' Basically you start easing over until finally someone realizes he's going to get run over unless he lets you in." - Trucker Kevin Johnson

    7. The Will Rogers Turnpike (Interstate 44), Oklahoma
"I've never driven from Tulsa to the Missouri state line when all four lanes were open the whole way. There is always-always-a mile or two where a lane is closed and you have to merge. I keep wondering, When do we get to pay and use the thing?" - Jeff Brucculeri, traffic reporter, Tulsa

I-15 north bound to Vegas on Friday isn't as bad as south bound I-15 to L.A. on Sunday. Imaging a bunch of tired, drunk drivers who just lost a bunch of money at the tables or the slots thinking they can drive 90 on a road that was undersized when it was built. Ten years ago Nevada tried to force California's hand by making the road six lane divided (3 each side) to the border, but CA has yet to step up. Maybe it's because they're a welfare state and would rather kill people than make a major logistical corridor safer. Limited access divided highways are supposed to be the safest kind of road, but I-15 between the NV line and Barstow is in the top 10 deadliest roads in the U.S.

I've driven on I-15 between Barstow and the Nevada State line. One thing do not drive it on a Friday during the day or on weekends, traffic will be backed up in both directions. Drive it in the early hours of the the day between 1am-7am traffic is at it's lightest. I've even driven it during the day in mid week traffic does slow down only because of the construction which never seems to end and with the tourist who has never seen a construction sight and those are the people who cause most of the accidents. Then you get the people who never seen an accident before.

I have to agree with the highway 299 comment. Highway 199 in the extreme northern part of CA, close to the OR border, isn't so fun either. Nothing like driving on narrow winding roads alongside cliffs with no guardrails.

I have also driven through Louisiana, will never drive through that state again. Completely tore up the bottom of our vehicle.

The truck drivers drove these highways for years. There heavy loads have torn up these roads. The states charge them a higher sales tax on their fuel, but they don't spend that money on repairing roads. The States use it to pay other bills, and pay for old and new welfare programs.

You wonder why they are like that. Demand your politicians to quit spending money they don't have.

I've travelled all over, and Louisiana roads are by far the worst. I live here, Acadia Parish, and the roads here are just one repaired pothole after another. Pitiful. I for one have given up on voting for tax related repairs....every politician in La. must be rich from these taxes, because they sure aren't going where they're supposed to be going.

My nomination are state roads in California. I don't mean well traveled roads that have tourist attractions on them, but roads in little hamlets in California.

I so agree with the PA assessment. I grew up there and lived at both ends of the state and the roads are absolutely terrible.

The fact that Chicago area roads aren't on the list bring your methodology into question. Bigtime. Take a ride on 290 during rush hour. Or go south on 294/80-94 around the bottom of the Lake and get back to me when you're anxiety level has you calling your Dr. for a perscription.
Potholes swallowing cars on surface streets (no lie!) and tell me your streets are worse.
Try winters of snow and ice followed by summers of unending construction and congestion. Suburban sprawl was not in the original design plan.

I have driven in 37 states, and Chicago-Gary area roads take the cake, bar none. It is the transportation hub of America and ridden hard and put away wet every single day.

I guess the taxes we already pay for road maintainence is now used for something else that's more important to our all knowing politicians.

I live right outside of New Orleans and they aren't joking about the Louisiana roads. They are just awful. When crossing over the Mississippi bordercrossing into Louisiana you know your there just by the *thud, thud, thud* It has actually woken my children from naps. It feels like you are constantly hitting speed bumps just at a much faster speed.

If the states want to know how their road systems, especially major one, are--ask truckers & business travelers---want the local info on side roads--ask the locals.

My husband was a driver long enough--he refused New York, New Jersey--most eastern seaboard runs and all southren runs past Ky or WV--one southren trip destroyed his refrigerator in his truck and cracked the undercarriage in the semi he was driving. Needless to say a 3 day run for him turned into a week and half more before he got back home.

Really with all the jokes about Missouri roads there's not even one in there?
