Turn on to spring's tribal style

Just when you think tribal styles have moved on, they come back in a brand new way. There is a strong dose of ethnic-inspired fashions being shown this season but if you cannot quite place the patterns, you are not alone. The looks are an interesting blend of cultures and styles coming together to create something entirely different.

The last time the tribal trend made its way through fashion, the looks were more contained and almost costume-like. This time the designs are meant to be incorporated into your wardrobe, mixed and matched with prints and accessories.

    Why choose tribal?

It is exotic: We may not be able to pinpoint exactly what nationality or culture the ethnic print is designed around, but the feel creates a cool vibe that is fun and a little mysterious. This kimono sleeved bubble dress has just that playful effect.

It is colorful: Spring/Summer 2012 is all about color. Look for unusual color combinations and vivid brights. Tribal can add a burst of energy to your appearance. Tribal print wedges are a great example of the bold colors shown this season. These multi-colored peep-toe booties can be paired with a simple outfit to give it a little pop. You can then add a pretty tribal necklace or bangles to balance the look.

It provides camouflage: If you have any bits and pieces you want to hide, a strong ethnic pattern can help keep those parts under wrap. Tribal patterns often come on tunics that will pair beautifully with a slim cut pants for a sleek look. An Arden B Blur Ruffle Tunic offers a bold, unexpected take on an ethnic tunic.

It is comfortable: Not only are the looser silhouettes flattering, they are comfortable. Look for tops that are loose without being baggy and be sure to pair it with a more form-fitting piece to keep the balance. Tribal patterns also offer a casual feel which makes them comfortable to wear. Wet Seal's tribal maxi dress features a banded tube top, smocked waist and ruffle trim.

Embellished ethnic or tribal patterns are often full of beading, trim, and sequins. The styles are a great way to draw the attention either up towards your face like with an embellished tunic, a multicolored bib tribal necklace, or help show off your legs with embellished sandals.
