YOUR FRIENDS' ACTIVITY

5 Neat and easy ways to burn calories all day, every day!

You know that friend, the one who is always tapping her leg, getting up to straighten the bookshelf, the one who generally just can't sit still? She's likely burning an extra 200 to 300 calories a day on top of any workouts she does or the amount of calories she burns just being alive. This process is neatly called NEAT, which stands for "NonExercise Activity Thermogenesis" (say that 5 times fast!), and it's essential for successful weight loss. Basically, it's the extra stuff you do, physically, all day long that adds up. Make a point to add more "neat" into your day and you can zap another 500 calories! Here are a few ideas:

Do crunches in bed: You could burn about 20 calories in under 5 minutes just by drawing your knees to your chest 25 to 50 times, plus it strengthens your abs and gets your blood pumping.

Check out these 10 ways to boost your calorie burn

Dance around while getting dressed: Turn up the radio or listen to upbeat music on your iPod (if you can) while doing all your morning rituals-an hour of hip shakin' can burn about 55 calories.

Tired of the belly fat? Dance it off!

Stand up! Don't sit when you can be on your feet-you'll burn about 40% more calories. So just take a stand-when you're on the phone, watching kids at the playground, making small talk at a party.

Laugh: Watch something that's consistently funny (like 30 Rock) and you could burn about 40 calories if you guffaw for 10 to 15 minutes straight.

2 Minutes to a happier, healthier you!

Walk, pace, jog down the hall: In other words, MOVE! Doing little bits of activity all day-taking the stairs to use the restroom on another floor at work, doing an extra lap around the grocery store-can help you burn an additional 375 calories a day!

Don't bank on it. Being active is great, but it's not going to give you that 500 calorie a day boost you were hoping for.

Honestly I don't really believe this article to the extreme it takes it to. Doing little active things like laughing, walking the extra distance in the parking lot etc. won't burn major calories maybe, but it will burn some. And every little bit helps. But you can't do these little things and then go home and gorge yourself on junk and not do any other exercise. Losing weight involves eating healthy (with sweets in moderation) and exercising regularly. But I think that these little things can be good for just a little extra help.

I'm with other posters. 30 Rock does not equal funny. As for getting up all the time. I wouldn't get much work done if I had to do that. My job requires me to be in front of a computer all day. Which is why I go for walks on my breaks, and hit the gym four times a week. Coupled with pilates at home.

HA. I started doing extra work around the house and outside in this past week and a half. Basically staying moving for 5 hours straight. Now I fit into my size 10 jeans again. Down from a 12 borderline 14. I am determined to get into my size 5's that are sitting in the basement by September, which is my hometowns potato festival. I want to look good and skinny. I also cut out most of my extra calories by drinking water instead of my 6-pack of pop a day. I cut out anything made with bleached white flour. Mostly eating chicken, fish and veggies and fruits for sweetness and taking a multivitamin. I feel better, Once I build up more stamina, I'll start running. Its a start, and I think it'll work as long as I stick to a plan.

30 Rock consistently funny? I don't think so. I'd never burn a single calorie watching...

    • Skepsikyma  •  2 years 10 months ago
Hmm, maybe this is why I can never gain weight. I'm always fidgeting or tapping my foot.

Did any of you naysayers even read the part in the article where the author says "She's burning 200 to 300 calories *on top of her regular workouts*"? (Emphasis mine.) The point is every little thing you do adds up.

And for those of you looking for tips to lose weight, I agree with whoever said "It's a lifestyle, it's not temporary." I worked as a cook for 10 years before I lost my job and was able to lose 40 pounds in 5 months simply by practicing portion control, eating slowly, and eating enough to satisfy my taste for the food. And dancing was my exercise of choice; not only dancing at the nightclubs for 5 hours straight (no I don't drink, I never acquired a taste for alcohol) but also taking jazz dance classes.

I was just told by my doctor that I need to lose 50 lbs. Okay, so don't smoke. Don't drink alcohol. Eat like a bird. Alright! And I'm grouchier than sin. Watch it!!!
