Valentine's Day for toddlers: It doesn't just have to be a sitter day

Valentine's Day means cards and parties for school-aged kids, for adults it means romance and sweethearts, but where do toddlers fit in? Many may think, "At the sitters," and that very well may be necessary for an adult Valentine's Day, but you can still celebrate Valentine's Day with your toddler earlier in the day even if you do have a romantic evening planned. After all, Valentine's Day is really about showing love to those we care about, there's no reason to skip over your wee loved ones.

    Valentine's Day breakfast for toddlers:

As a kid my favorite V-day activity was making heart pancakes. You'd be surprised how much joy a toddler can get from some food coloring, pancake batter and some heart shaped yummies. You can also add fruit and whip cream to make it a special treat.

    Valentine's Day fun for toddlers:

In the afternoon, you could make your own cards and mailboxes and then play a game of mail delivery. You could even fill out real cards, and then deliver them to your child's family and friends together. You could also set up a V-day scavenger hunt with clues that lead to a sweet treat. There are also lots of Valentine's Day books and movies available to enjoy together this holiday. You may even consider allowing some rare rule breaking, such as letting your toddler nap in your bed or napping with them for once. Anything that makes your toddler feel special. The main goal is to spend the day together and have fun, no matter what you decide to do.

At the sitter's on Valentine's Day:

If you do end up taking your toddler to a sitter later in the evening on Valentine's Day, you can still continue the fun for your kiddo. Consider giving your sitter some extra treats, activities or cards for your child to give periodically while you're gone. Toddlers also love to be brought back things when their parents go out without them. Try to find something cool to bring home with you for your child, even if it's just some leftover popcorn or a dessert from the restaurant. It shows you were thinking about them even if they weren't with you. A quick phone call mid-date can have a similar effect. My toddlers love talking on the phone.
