Google announced that it is bringing textbooks to the Google Play store for students to purchase and rent for their Android devices and for reading on the web. The company has partnered with five major textbook publishers and says it will offer a comprehensive selection. The books are expected to rent and sell for an 80 percent discount compared to regular retail prices and will launch in August.
According to a report from loan giant Sallie Mae, college costs are driving decisions about which schools to attend, what to study and even where to live. Parents no longer foot the largest portion of the bill, according to the lender's annual survey. That role goes to grants and scholarships, with student loans coming in third.
Eva Longoria wants equal access to higher education for all Latinos. The actress and spoke about the importance of education for the Latino community at the 2013 National Council La Raza conference in New Orleans. Longoria pointed out that college graduation rates for Latinos are at an all-time high but ?[they?re] not keeping up with demographic changes,? she said. College graduation rates for Hispanics have increased seven-fold since 2008, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. Yet the Hispanic population in the U.S. grew 43 percent from 2000 to 2010.
