17 ways to fight osteoporosis

By Tammy Worth

Most people know calcium strengthens bones. But there are more than a dozen other ways to fight osteoporosis, the silent, bone-thinning condition that can lead to fractures, back and neck pain, and a loss of up to 6 inches of height over time.

Both men and women can get osteoporosis, but it's more common in women, especially after menopause. About one in five women over age 50 in the United States have it.

Taking preventive measures is key, as many people with osteoporosis will get bone fractures before they even know they have the disease.

    Chiropractors recommend OsteOrganical supplements.

Nice to see they totally skipped one of the most important things you should supplement with and went with drug therapy instead. Magnesium has been shown to be just as important as calcium for strong bones, if not actually even more important. Not only is it important for bone health, but it performs all sorts of other wonderful functions in your body, and when there's too much calcium in the body, you cannot properly use magnesium.

I noticed that in taking magnesium, I don't have leg/foot cramps as bad. when I take calcium- and eat bananas, that my legs/feet cramp up that night. wierd

My Aunt drank a six pack a day of Coke for thirty years. She had osteoporosis. If you can't be a good example - be a horrible warning.
I'm 60 and have the bones of a 30 year old (had a density test) because I have taken Calcium/Vitamin D since I was 20 and done yoga since my teens. Haven't had a soda since I was in my 20's and don't eat junk.
The drugs have so many side effects that I don't want to end up an any of them.

I have to say this is the first health issue I've run across that skinny people are at higher risk for than heavier people. I think a sense of humor in life will keep us younger than anything else. Look at George Burns, Bob Hope, etc. Smiles.

I thought this was going to be all natural ways to prevent osteoporosis.....forget the drugs that cause side affects. Like the advise to limit coffee.

Salmon and broccoli are rich in calcium.

Yes, this article DID go from excellent to awful. Dairy and meat LEACHES calcium from bones. The drugs mentioned, in addition to serious side effects and death, used over time PROMOTE bone fractures and loss. I am 55, post menapausal and have (according to density tests) "amazing bones"...have always lived SIMPLY - no soda, no meat, no cows milk, a little cheese, lots of fruit and veggies, exercise of some sort daily (I can walk always!), smoke free and a positive attitude! Want to ELIMINATE 90% of chronic conditions? Live simply - tread lightly on the earth - eat real food - drink water, tea, fresh juice and a little coffee and wine - love well - laugh lots!

high rate of osteoporosis is here in our country coz some people know a little or just ignore their health. We love to eat delicious foods everyday most likely when we celebrate birthdays, fiesta and any occassions oh i forgot christmas time more food on the table.so many meat, dairy foods intake that makes our body acidic. even fruits.our body needs plenty of calcium for our bones.sunshine early in the morning like 7 a.m to 9 a.m. will help our body to get enough calcium which we do not get from foods we are suppose to get.i suggest we eat also veg.and all natural ways to get calcium.i don't believe in some med. intakes it will just make our bones brittle. the doc. say the growth of the children stops at the age of 25 .so we must take care of our body take a brik walk if you ca't do exercise it helps a lot. i seen it works for my aunt helen who has illness and stay in the hospital for less that a week. she stay in bed just med. and some food no sunshine no walk she really is weak. so after her recovery in the hospital i told my cousin to have her a daily sunshine and eat fruits thank God she is strong now. the food intake and sunshine walking in the morning helps her bone strong though not like before at least she is strong now.

I'd normallly be the first one to advise staying away from Western Medicine, but I recently read that studies show that women between the ages of 65 and 69 who break a hip are 5 times more likely to die within a year, compared to thier healthy conterparts! So preventing Osteoporosis is serious stuff! Actually, all breaks are tied to increased immortality. With that being said, the preferred preventive method would be to use natural atlernatives to drugs and maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, If you do suffer from a fracture during your elder years, then chances are preventing osteoporosis will be an afterthought. If it's a matter of being able to enjoy extra years on this earth with my family or dying within a year, I'd rather do the drugs and live!

Where are the 17 ways? All I see is "start early" and a bunch of photographs? What happened to words in an article, not just pictures (I'm not illiterate, you know!).
    • Ray 21 days ago
Well you must be illiterate if you saw the pictures but failed in the readings accompanying them!

There are natural hormone therapies that help prevent bone loss. I use Ostaderm from Ask the Doctor, Helen Pansanti. I have used since I was 46 and I am now 61. I am petite and small bone and I have no bone loss. Please try to use natural products, there are no side affects.

I thought there was research that showed that breaking down protein leeches calcium from bones? I understood that was a reason why Americans who consume the most dairy products in the world have higher rates of osteoporosis. I know the meat and dairy industry who sponsor much of the nutritional educational materials in schools etc wouldn't like those facts if they hold true.

I think all of these comments are great!!! I believe staying away from drugs is the best thing you can do. To note, we are not meant to be indoors all of the time. we need to get outdoors more often. the sun is the best thing.

I guess moderation in everything is the key word and the healthiest diet.

This article must have been sponsored by the pharmaceuticals. There is more about drugs in here than the postive affects of exercise...
  • Broco Lee  •  7 months ago
The best way to fight it is through prevention, but believe it or not some people already have the disease. For those that think the article "useful until it pushes drugs at the end", those medications are only mentioned because they HELP PEOPLE THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN DIAGNOSED with osteoporosis and are used to help strengthen the weak bones and prevent further bone loss.

My doctor wanted to prescribe an injection called Forteo for my osteoporosis. It has a long list of side effects and costs over a thousand dollars a month. It can only be taken for two years because it hasn't been fully tested on humans and it is known to cause liver cancer in lab rats. I refuse to take any osteoporosis drugs.
