Ways to avoid regret in your professional life

Most of us spend more time working than we do with loved ones or even sleeping. Considering how big of a part work plays in our lives, it's one of the major areas in which we should be the most satisfied. Unfortunately for many that's not exactly the case. One of the best ways to succeed in your professional life is to get rid of negative thinking and a big part of that is eliminating regret. It sounds a lot easier than it actually is, but it's completely worth the effort. So what are some ways you can eliminate and avoid regret in your professional life in order to be more successful and happy?

    Ask for what you want

Whether it's a raise, a promotion or that corner office, if you want something and you truly feel that you deserve it, don't hesitate to ask for it. There are so many who get to a point in their career when they say "I regret not asking for it years ago." Make sure you're not one of them.

    Have a job you love

One of the biggest regrets many have in their professional life is that they work at a job or in an industry they don't like and didn't go for something they really wanted for one reason or another. You spend so many hours at your job so you deserve to want to be there. Money is great, but happiness is so much more rewarding. If there's a job you really want, go for it even if it means you have to do it part time until you get more established.

    Don't get too comfortable

You should never get so comfortable in your current job that you stop growing and learning. It's even worse if you're so comfortable that you're actually afraid to get a new job that you know deep down would be better for you. Take the risk otherwise years from now you might regret all the years that you could have been at a job that fulfilled you more.

    Take risks

Nothing is ever guaranteed personally or professionally, but many are much more reluctant to take risks in their professional life for fear of losing their livelihood. It's completely understandable to be nervous about taking chances, but if there's something you really want to do, you don't want to look back years from now and wonder what could have happened.

    Leave your mistakes behind you

Dwelling on your mistakes is going to hold you back rather than propel you forward. Everyone makes mistakes, the key is to learn from them and not repeat them. The best way not to have regrets is to accept what's previously happened and consider today a clean slate. Don't be so hard on yourself!

    Make friends with your coworkers

Don't be one of those people who goes to work and does the job without interacting with their coworkers. It can feel incredibly lonely to not have friends at your job and you may find yourself regretting it, especially if you need to find another job and have no connections due to your lack of networking.

The key to avoiding regrets in your professional life is to focus on what you really want and not be afraid to go for it. It's much better to know you took the chance than to look back and wish you had. So many are worried about the negative that could happen, but few focus on the fact that something really great could come of it. Take some risks and forget regret. You may get a pleasant surprise.
