Ways to save money by cleaning out your fridge and pantry

One space in the home where a lot of money is often wasted is the kitchen, specifically in the pantry and fridge. How many times have you smelled something awful in your fridge and had to toss it out or came across something in your pantry that went bad? The next time you have to throw out a food item, picture yourself with a wad of dollar bills in your hand and tossing them into the garbage can. There are several ways cleaning out your fridge and pantry is a major way to save yourself money on food products in the long and short term.

You learn what products you don't need

We've all purchased products at some point that we thought we really wanted and didn't, and sometimes we end up buying them again thinking that we're going to use them at some point. When you clean out your pantry and fridge, you come across those types of products. The product I used to over-purchase was microwave popcorn. Now every time I reach for it in the store, I really think about if I'm going to use it; most of the time, I end up putting it back.

You find products you didn't know you had

One of the biggest benefits of cleaning out the fridge and pantry is that you find items that you didn't even know you had that you can still use. You know how it is; you buy an item because you didn't think you already had it and you end up finding at least one or two on your pantry shelves. Chances are after cleaning out the kitchen, you'll be able to cross at least a couple of items off your next shopping list. Check the expiration dates first before you save anything.

    You find new recipes

Did you ever see the recipes on the back of certain food boxes? You'd be surprised how many are inexpensive and easy to make. Some of my favorite recipes I actually found on the back of these boxes when I was cleaning out my pantry. They became great alternatives to more expensive meals but are just as delicious or better.

    You organize to prevent overspending

When you clean out everything and reorganize your fridge and pantry, you get everything in order so you can see what you already have and what you need next time you go food shopping. You won't have to wonder if you have certain items buried underneath everything else. Food shopping will be a much more efficient process.

It's likely going to take a few hours to get your fridge and pantry cleaned out, but it's worth it. Not only will you save yourself money, but you'll have a more organized space to work with.
