Chunky sweaters are cozy in the fall. If you avoid thick sweaters because you think they add visual pounds or bring back bad memories, know that knits have come a long way. Even chunky sweaters can look chic if you style them correctly.
How to style a chunky sweater
Whether you found the sweater brand new or came across a hand-me-down, you can look trendy and cool with the right accessories. You do not need a lot to make this look work, though. The sweater itself is a bold look, so you can skip heavy or statement necklaces. Instead consider a wide leather or chain link belt to accentuate your waist. A cocktail ring or fun bracelet is another good look.
Do the unexpected
Sure you can slip a long boyfriend cardigan over a menswear-inspired outfit with high-heeled oxfords. That is expected and completely on track with the trends of the day. On the other hand, a thick cable knit sweater over a floral mini skirt or lacy maxi skirt is an unexpected look that also works for fall.
Be sure only the sweater is thick if you are layering. Thin t-shirts or tanks add color without bulk. Skinny jeans, jeggings or a knee-length skinny pencil skirt keep you looking sleek, even with a fisherman friendly sweater. You can also layer knits with knits. Consider throwing a cardigan sweater over a tight knit sweater dress and knit tights, add boots and you are set.
Leave your boots on.
Boots are the best companion for a chunky sweater. Tall, sleek leather boots create better balance than chunky boots.
How to care for chunky knits
- Do not hang knit sweaters. This should be written in bold on the care label. Fold sweaters and store them in drawers or on a shelf.
- Do not wash with your jeans. I learned the hard way, more than I would like to admit. Chunky sweaters may look tough, but they will be beaten down by these washers and dryers. Instead of using these appliances, air out, Febreeze or take it to the dry cleaner a few times a season.
- Feel the sweater before purchasing. Even if you love the color, and the shape is perfect, if the knit is scratchy, you will not wear it often enough.
- Borrow a sweater. Look in your boyfriend's closet, or ask your mom if she has any old sweaters you can try. Perfectly worn-in sweaters are extra comfortable, authentically retro or simply unique.
