10 Tips to Find the Perfect Pet Sitter

    by GALTime.com
It's vacation season and that means sun, fun and what the heck are we going to do with our dog? Or cat, if you're a cat person. For many people, the thought of leaving their much loved, four-legged family member in a boarding kennel is too hard. A pet sitter is another good option. A neighbor or nearby family member may volunteer to help out, but Dr. Susan Nelson, veterinarian and clinical assistant professor at Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, says there are some things you need to keep in mind when choosing a pet sitter.

    Here are her tips:

    * Have the pet sitter come to your home to meet your pet prior to the sitting, so you can observe how sitter and pet interact.

    * Ask what services the sitter offers, such as in-home grooming, walking, training and playtime.

    * Ask what training the sitter has received.

    * Ask if the pet sitter can provide written proof of insurance and/or if they are bonded.

    * Ask for a list of other clients as references.

    * Ask if the sitter associated with a veterinarian and if the sitter is willing to use your veterinarian for emergency.

    * Find out if the sitter has an experienced backup.

    * Ask if the sitter is comfortable and experienced at giving medications and/or injections, if needed.

    * Find out how often the sitter will check on your pet.

    * Ask for a written service contract that spells out the sitter's services and fees.

kittenNelson says pet owners have their own responsibilities to make sure pet-sitting goes smoothly. Here's her list.

We just leave our pets in the house and have my mom stop over a couple times a day to feed them and make sure they are ok and let them out to potty. Pretty simple. They usually sleep all day.

Pet sitters can also come during the day while you're at work for pets who suffer from separation anxiety. If your pet has not been properly socialized around other people and animals, a kennel may be very stressful. Make sure your pet sitter is willing to work with you and your pet to build up trust. In my pet sitting business, Trusty Paws, my goals are forging trusting relationships and using technologies to improve services. I operate in the Columbus, OH area. http://www.trustypaws.com

This is an excellent article for not only people looking to hire a pet sitter, but some great guidelines that pet sitters should be following. Check out www.DublinPetSitter.com for an example of a great pet sitter in the Dublin, Pleasanton and Livermore areas of California.

Honestly I don't trust anyone but my husband and myself to take care of our "kids"! We have a set of part siamese part persian cats and they are our babies! Their mother was our very first pet and the love of my husbands life until she passed away 6 monthes ago. We got her when she was a mere 4 weeks old and she was with us until she was 10 years old! When she got pregnant with the twins she stayed very close to me and as a matter of fact I was with her to help her give birth! I really don't think she could have done it without me or so she made it seem! Now with her gone our female twin is all but attached at the hip to my hubby and the same goes with me and our male twin! They have set bedtimes (yes our cats sleep at night!), set feeding times and set snack times! We went so far as to train them both to travel in the car (without a pet carrier) and they ride and mind very well! So I'm really never in need of a sitter! They go everywhere with us and have been welcomed many times at several major hotels and resorts!

Excellent information for those seeking professional help with their pets. The neighborhood kid and your mother-in-law probably don't carry petsitting insurance. The professional petsitter will have insurance and/or bonding. In the Jackson, MS, US, area please contact Priority Pets. Online information at http://prioritypets.blogspot.com
