3 Tricks to Beat Holiday Debt Now

    By Beth Kobliner, REDBOOK

A friend recently confessed to me that she's still paying off last year's holiday gift-buying bills! Start saving today so you don't ring in the New Year with a Visa hangover.

    1. Budget and don't budge. Figure out exactly how much you can afford to drop on presents without jeopardizing your regular bills. Then, siphon off a little money from each paycheck for the next six weeks so you aren't dipping into your emergency savings or relying on credit to play Secret Santa. Consider stashing the cash in a savings account (watch out for fees!) so you aren't tempted to blow it.

    2. Skip Black Friday. The day after Thanksgiving is the gateway to holiday spending sprees. Though you may find some deals, retailers have a dirty little secret: "For a limited time only" or "While supplies last" promotions are classic ways to trick you into buying things you don't need by making you think they're about to sell out. (They rarely are.) My strategy: Avoid the frenzy by knocking your whole list out by the week before Thanksgiving. The morning after Turkey Day? Stay home and eat pie.

    3. Buy virtually. Shoppers are willing to pay about 50 percent more for stuff they can actually touch, according to a recent study from Caltech, so the free samples and product demos stores offer during the holidays can put a wrench in your spending plan. Try to stick to the Internet, and make your first stop couponsherpa.com to score special discount codes.

Keep your budget for gifts LOW and stick to it. Talk to family and friends about lowering the budgets and expectations for gifts as well. Then, focus on the true meaning of Christmas.

Christ was not born in Walmart, K-Mart or Sears. Think about the TRUE meaning of Christmas. Share it with family and close friends. If you are alone, volunteer at a Vets Hospital/Senior Citizens Home, they will appreciate the company and you will truly feel the REAL meaning of Christmas.

My family and friends and I stopped giving gifts about 5 years ago. We are all adults and realize gifts are a waste of time and money and we have everything we need in life. . I am proud to say I have never done a black friday or after Xmas sale. No interest in that crazy activity. Instead we spend time with each other and have meals together which means so much more. I am fortunate that I do not have to shop, stand in line or sit in traffic. This time of year I save while others spend wildly I take part of my savings and give myself a nice trip during the holidays to escape the madness. I lounge on a beach, hike and sight see while others are stressed out mess.

Gifts could come in other form such as doing nice things for those you love not only during holidays. Simply asking them including your friends if there are errands you could run for them while you're out means a lot. However, giving a gift material wise for a pure pleasure of giving it to someone for things they may not be able to afford but actually need could be just as nice. It is not a total waste and shouldn't be equate to just materialism.

Leave the U S during the Commercial (Christmas) holidays and go somewhere that Christmas is not celebrated.
      • DaretoDream2010 4 months ago
Why the hecl would you do that if you actually want to celebrate Christmas. It's not just presents and decorations, it's actually celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and if you believe in that then go for it and be merry. Besides, buying a plane ticket to go somewhere else like you suggest would cost just as much money in the long run.

Start asking who wants want early. Set aside as early at September and you will have no issue. Last year I spent an extra $450 on gifts for last minute stuff. Never again!
