3 Ways to Deal with a Hater

Kate UptonYouTube star Kate Upton just landed on the cover of Sports Illustrated's annual swimsuit issue…and she's already getting trashed by some modeling industry people. One casting agent even told the New York Times that Kate's look was "too obvious" with her "too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy." Um…ouch.

    By Korin Miller

Like Kate, you've probably run into criticism about your work at some point (although, for your sake, we hope it wasn't that harsh). And whether it comes from a coworker, your boss, or a total stranger, it hurts. We tracked down experts for their tips on how to deal when, like Kate, you get served some serious haterade.

    Get Pissed
It's normal to get upset when someone says something that's less than positive about you-take a few moments or even a few weeks to process it. "It's fine to be emotional about it," says executive and life coach Meredith Haberfeld, cofounder of the Institute For Coaching. Of course, if your bitchy coworker puts you down at work, it's best to wait until you can have alone time to freak. If you have to vent ASAP, career consultant Alexandra Levit, author of They Don't Teach Corporate in College, recommends stepping outside for a sec and calling a close friend. That way, you can get it off your chest without sparking any office gossip.

    Put It In Perspective
Okay, sure-it's totally offensive when your coworker says something mean, but it's important to take a little time to think about why she might have said that. Sometimes there's something positive to be learned from a career critic, so Levit recommends taking a sec to ask yourself, "Is something about what they said true?"

And other times, people are just haters for the sake of it-or their motivation is a little skewed. Maybe your coworker is pissed that your boss clearly likes you better, or maybe she just gets her kicks out of trashing other people. In Kate's case, it's possible the casting agent was just ticked his company didn't get to her first.

    Shake It Off
While it's easy to zero in on the negative stuff, Levit says to remind yourself of all of the awesome things people have said about you. Most of the time, that great feedback totally outweighs the negative. In Kate's case, we think she's gorgeous and we've heard loads of dudes drool over her hot bod so, really, she wins.

As a general rule, people who are extremely negative and hateful with no obvious reason behind it are very unhappy or insecure and are taking it out on an easy target. If I have to deal with someone who is just mean for the sake of being mean, I usually don't take it very seriously because it's more about them than me. It's easier to avoid and ignore nasty people because confronting them and lowering yourself down to their level is exactly what they want.

But ya gotta admit...Sometimes whoopin a bullies arse ...feels pretty darn good...ahummm

I absolutely agree with you, Disgruntled. Sometimes it's just best to let it go and not let it affect you. You have to admit, if someone is "hating on you" a lot of times it's a compliment, must mean you are doing something right ... that they wish they would've. ;)

There will be a time when loud-mouthed, incompetent people seem to be getting the best of you. When that happens, you only have to be patient and wait for them to self destruct. It never fails.

It's easy to deal with what others have to say, it's what they do that can be horrible. Bullied through school, thought I was done with that until adult bullies destroyed my business.

I was actually quite surprised when I first read what that casting agent said. Brutal, and not true. I hope that she doesn't take it to heart. Yes, she is rich and beautiful but I still feel bad when people are trashed for no good reason.

I don't hate her, but her breasts in the swimsuit look odd, and every cosmetic flaw has been airbrushed out, so you probably wouldn't recognize her on the street. To address the gist of the article, the best advice is to minimize the haters. If somebody calls you a #$%$ look them dead in the eye, and say "I love peer recognition, thank you!" and walk away. If someone makes a personal attack like "You are lazy", just say "I wouldn't be if I had more enthusiasm" and again, walk away. Once you minimize them, you take away their power.

Keep living your life. Whenever I start something new like a job or shedding weight people swore that my attitude had changed when it had not. I just got tired of dealing with the same people and got happier in life. My motto in life to worry about yourself.

If I was paid beaucoup bucks to pose on a magazine cover, do you think I would give a #$%$ about other people's thoughts?

Let Haters be your motivators look why is it we feel that everybody should like us or have the approval of others look some will and some won't it shoudln't matter for if you don't think highly of yourself or feel good about yourself then the real hater is you.

You can discover what your critics loathe most about themselves by what they say about you.

Why is "hateer" the new leftist buzz word?? People act like hate is always a bad thing. Is it not ok to hate the thought of child molestation? Is is not good to hate murder?? Even God Himself is a "hater", as He hates sin! Thanks, people, for ruining another perfectly good word.

I'm a big fan of "killing them with kindness."

And if you can't find any kindness, a brick will work.

Criticism is not hatred and equating the two is even more divisive. Envy is not hatred. Jeolousy is not hatred. It is believing that they are that has caused the demand for political correctness which is no more than restricting the speech and thought of others. Why is everybody so sensitive?

Liberal progressive people are the biggest group of haters in this country even though they attempt to portray themselves are being open minded and accepting of those who don't have the same warped views as them. They also have a superiority complex and consider those with conservative views as being less intelligent which is totally out of touch with reality.
