Being an overachiever can help you score a promotion, run faster, even zip through errands. But doing too much to your skin-rigorous washing, product overload-can lead to breakouts and splotches. Return your routine to smooth sailing.
Hit a rough patch? For each statement, read the corresponding strategy for a clean, clear complexion. You've snoozed eight hours, but the skin beneath your eyes still resembles a croissant: puffy and flaky.
Go easy under eyes: "The skin surrounding eyes is very thin, so avoid contact with concentrated, potentially irritating antiagers such as retinoids and alpha hydroxy acids," says Doris Day, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City. If your face cream contains these ingredients, prep eye area with a fragrance-free cream like Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion, $6. Doing this will create a thin barrier to protect against possibly aggravating products.Try these simple strategies for feeling oh-so-soft from head to toe.
Your lips feel inflamed and chapped, despite religious applications of balm, serum and plumpers.
Protect your lips: "Women tend to lick their lips more when they have tasty products on them, causing lips to get dry and chapped," says Kenneth Beer, M.D., a dermatologist in Palm Beach, Florida. Rather than slather on your 12th coat of vanilla gloss, go for a flavorless balm that nourishes. (self likes Nivea A Kiss of Relief SOS Lip Care, $4.) Still dry? Trade dehydrating long-wearing colors and stains for moisture-packed lipstick.
Get the red out: Cheeks are prone to blotchiness because they host tons of blood vessels that naturally rise to the surface as you age. To discourage spots, skip the exfoliants and use an unscented, milky cleanser such as Ahava Dermud Soothing Facial Cleanser, $20. Then try a cream with aloe or cucumber, both of which calm redness.
