YOUR FRIENDS' ACTIVITY

Even with the economy starting to rally (or so we're told), it can't hurt to find ways to earn a little more money. But who has time for a second (or third) job? Here are five ways you can make a little cash without searching the want ads or adding to your commute:

Getty ImagesGetty Images1. Cull through your books, DVD, CD, and video game collections. Half.com is part of the vast online flea market that is eBay, but it's much, much easier to navigate. There are no listing fees, for one thing, and while you do pay a small percentage of the profit once your item has sold, it's really quite reasonable. Your listings are limited to media (books, audiobooks, video games, music, movies), but Half.com reimburses most of your shipping costs, collects the money from buyers for you, and pays out twice a month directly to your checking account. Cash4Books.net offers a decent price for newer hardcover books and textbooks (they even pay for shipping). If there's a used book store in your town, see if they'll give you cash, or at least store credit, for your books. Want to quit your bookstore addiction cold-turkey? The library is your best bet -- and they may even take some of your own books off your hands, and give you a bit of a tax deduction in return.

Getty ImagesGetty Images2. Make those coins count.
It's amazing how quickly spare change can add up! So much so that some banks offer to manage it for you by automatically rounding your debit card purchases up to the nearest dollar and depositing the difference into your savings account. There's no reason why you can't do that for yourself: Instead of spending your coins, dump them into a container at the end of each day and haul them in to your own bank every few months. Don't think you have the discipline to do so? Trade them in for gift cards at those green Coinstar machines at your grocery store. Coinstar will count your change for free if you're using them to get a gift card or eCertificate; use the cards to augment your shopping budget if you need to. The gift cards are for big-name stores like Albertson's, Amazon.com, Borders, Lowes, and Old Navy -- check out the entire list at Coinstar.com.

    3. Get crafty.
If you have a hobby, put it to work for you. Do you like to make earrings? Sell them on Etsy. Make your own giftbaskets? Got a flair for graphic design? Make your own mugs, T-shirts, and more on Zazzle or Cafepress and sell them there or on Craigslist.

    4. Make money by saving money. Raise your deductible on your car and home insurance. Look into ways to save on cooling costs this summer. Eliminate the extras, or substitute DIY versions so you can still indulge without the investment. (Example: Five Starbucks-type lattes a week = about $20. Five convenience-store coffees a week = about $10. Five made-at-home coffees a week = About $1.50 (and that's using $8-a-pound coffee beans, which brew up about 30 large cups of coffee per pound). Try swapping instead of shopping: At Zwaggle.com, which is free to join, members earn and use points by trading gently-used items (clothing, baby stuff, games and toys) with one another.

    5. Clear out the clutter. There's Craigslist, of course, and eBay, but did you know that you can even sell your collections on Amazon.com? Yes, there's a fee, but you can reach a huge (and sometimes international) audience. Don't feel like listing your things or trekking to the post office? Donate them to charity and take the tax write-off instead; the Salvation Army offers a guide to how much your stuff may be worth.

How do you find ways to make money without getting a second job?

One of the biggest ways I save is the "using grocery coupons" system. I have started a "coupon co-op" of sorts. I trade coupons with neighbors, friends and people at work. Takes time to go through coupons but I usually do it while watching Tv. Then I don't feel so guilty about the time spent on the couch. Savings lately have been from $13 to $54 every two weeks. I also check for coupons in the junk mail we get for "take out". Can usually find a "two for one" deal on entrees at favorite fast food places. We only use the fast food coupons once a week though. Watching calories and money is hard with fast food. Use that as a treat, not an every day expense.

Did that person who claimed to make money writing resumes also say that she "sells herself from home"? LOL.

These are lousy ideas...who hasn't heard them a lot of times already. Besideds ebay is not what it used to be. I have quit listing, and lots of luck on Etsy.

I do the whole EBAY thing, but don't make nearly as much as I used to with stuff that is just lying around the house. Used to make 500$ easily a month before the economy went. Now you've got to have anything new and in demand in order to make a profit. I also do HALF.COM for books and DVD'S. Might make 20 bucks extra a month if lucky. I do Cash for Gold USA for gold jewelry, sterling silver jewlery, and loose diamonds. This has brought me in about 100 bucks extra this month. Also, do NEXTWORTH.COM and GAZELLE.COM for the leftover cells and ipods. Made an extra 25 bucks off of 3 old cells from these sites this month. These are only minor extra income fixes though. I will be getting a summer job.

Go find a plasma donation location like Girfols Biomat. They pay cash tax free dollars for your plasma. You can donate twice in a seven day period.
Most pay $20 for the first donation of the week and $30 dollars for the second donation of the week. If you have had your HEP-B shots your anc make $40 for the first donation and $50 for the second. Plus just think you are helping make must needed meds. Do the math, I've donated over 400 times @ twice a week

It takes approximately 34 soda cans to equal one pound of aluminum. One pound of aluminum will earn you anywhere from .32 to .46 cents depending on your region. Definitely do-able even if just to continue the caffeine fix. Also, If you have a lost skill (ex. sewing, swimming, wilderness skill, knife sharpening .) consider teaching or offering your skill for a price.

Looking at these comments, I am amazed how a majority of them are seething with greed. So what if these ideas don't reap hundreds of dollars at a time. For those people who are looking at a way to supplement their BUDGET, they are great starter ideas. No one is expected to become the next Donald Trump, or Steve Job by doing this. I personally appreciate any tips on how I can get rid of some of that stuff I have in my house that I am not using. For those of you who just throw these things away, or feel they are a waste of time, why are you reading this?

I forget library due dates, then have to pay a fine. I prefer to buy new released books and when I've got a collection, I donate them for a tax deduction. When I was a stay at home wife with five children, I sewed most of their clothing, made dolls, crocheted and knitted gifts; made macrame hangers and pom pom pets to help pay for the doctor. I would take the little ones to Goodwill as a toy store. They were thrilled with their treasures. Kids all grown, single, and retired, I tutor, substitute teach when I choose, and still make home made gifts and bake goodies for gifts. I shouldn't say hand made, but custom handcrafted. Also I save change, and aluminum cans. Then when I can, I do it myself. Hardly ever eat out, as my family and myself prefer my cooking which I enjoy, but not on a daily basis. I cook on weekends, and it's "chicken today, and feathers tommorrow."

I see a lot of people have panned these ideas. But, I cleaned out my bookshelves last year of many titles that were still popular (self improvement is a huge seller)and some CDs as well, incl audiobooks. I made $75 off that stuff. Not bad.

Granted it's not regular income. But still - better than a kick in the butt.

Ok first of no one buys used cds anymore. and old video games are worthless. i tried all this and i sold a whopping 4 items. was enough to get a 6 pack to ease the pain of being broke. you want to make money? sell spice. period. only job i could get and the money is raking in. til they make it illegal. but till then its paying my bills. government hasn't done squat to help so i relied on the people and they came through. they want to get high and i provide a legal way to do it. every head shop across the U.S. carries it.

If you have a VISA Card, (even if it is a Debit Card) Check to see if you can register it at Visa Extras (Reqards) I get a point per $ spent and then I can trade those points in for gift cards or merchandise. For Debit Cards, just use them as a credit card and then you earn the points. I have to use my debit card for the usual things like groceries, pharmacy, etc and so this way I can get rewarded for just the usual and customary.

These aren't bad ideas. I've been selling my used books on Amazon for the last couple of years and have made some nice extra money. It's a great way to recycle. The change in the jar is also a nice idea. You'd be surprised how much change you throw into those jars. I think the point is if your looking for some extra cash and are willing to put in the effort, you can have some nice extra income.

Horrible ideas! I understand where they are getting at, but they should title this "How to make pennies on the side."

With 120k in law school student loans, I was in a similar situation where I had to decide how to make extra money fast. I have always been passionate about fitness, and was a college track athelete so I got a second gig as a personal trainer.

I am doing something I actually enjoy, save money on gym memberships, and earn $22/hour on the side. I don't even count it as a job because it is something I love, and I do it AFTER work so it does not interfere with my lifestyle. Get a second job around your passions, and save your money and that is a better way to make extra cash!!!

I also made personal decisions such as cooking my own lunches, instead of eating out. That saves you about $30 -$70 per WEEK, which adds up over time.

Coinstar is not very good if you are turning in a lot of coin. It's better to just get some coin rolls (which are free at the bank) and just roll your own! Coinstar charges .10 cents for everydollar!!

Selling stuff around the house is a good idea. It declutters your home and you make money for things that you like more!

My wife has had her salary cut by 40% thanks to Obammy's crappy housing programs that he has in effect...but I wont get into that.

She has made up some income (about $200/mo) by clipping coupons and taking online surveys. Additionally, we receive all kinds of free products in the mail. While this $200/mo does not even come close to the 40% hit she took, it still helps.
