jobs, healthcare, economy, these seems to be the dominating topics in our news media today, how about education? no one seems to be talking about that, why? well based on research,
about 1/3 of high school students do not graduate, with hispanics and blacks being a majority. According to this website ' www.americaspromise.org ' , about 1.2 million students( 7,000 kids a day) drop out from school each year. This website www.all4ed.org also explains that if we do not address this issue, high school drop outs from the class of 2006-07 would cost the U.S. an estimate of $329 billion in lost wages, taxes and productivity over their lifetime. Below are the 6 major reasons students drop out from school in usa,..researched and compiled by www.jachunt.com (for their 'PROJECT TEACH USA' campaign).
1.) Heroes: our kids at school no longer have 'educated heroes' , every kid wants to be a sportsman,an actor or a celebrity of some sort. Even the educated heroes of the past we used to have are no longer celebrated, where are they albert einsteins of our generation we no longer hear about them.
2.) Media: this point might surprise many, but unfortunately its true.even the media houses might not agree with this, education receives very minimal attention from the media, more than 70% of the programs on TV today is centered on shows, celebrities, series, where are the educational programs?
3.) Broken Homes: this point is trully personal, with majority of this point dominant among the latinos and the blacks, most kids that drop out from school come from broken homes, either their parents are crack heads ,single parents/separated or not learned enough to motivate their kids to school.
4.) Focus: this point solely depends on the student and his surrounding, students tend to loose the fire after the first year of school, may be due to workload or peer influence, and the people around him are not learned enough to inspire him to continue.
5.) Money/Finance: With our economy still in the recovering stages, school fees increasing everyday, requirements to get scholarship/financial aid on the increase, most students don't want to heap up loans on their accounts, when the certainty of getting a job is still shaky.
6.) Teachers/Professors: this is one point that school administrators have to take personal, because our teachers play a big part on students, some teachers can really discourage their students, my first year in school, my professor said, and i quote" the truth its i only expect 10 people to graduate from this class," and he was talking to a class of 35 people, that is not success motivation in any way, he instilled fear into us.that made many drop out not because they were not intelligent, but because they felt some where brighter and could not keep up with the unnecessary competition. these professors have a way of giving their students a hard time, excessive tests, assignments, quiz, practicals,.though these are wonderful educative tools..but really are not always necessary all the time..
