Picking the wrong backpack might land your child in the nurse's office. Soreness or pain in the shoulders, lower back and neck, and tingling in the fingers are classic signs of a backpack injury. Choose the right size. The backpack shouldn't hang lower than your child's hips. Don't buy one for him to grow into.
Don't overload it. The bag should carry no more than 15 percent of your child's body weight.
Watch the straps. The shoulder straps should be snug and worn on both shoulders (never sling the pack over one shoulder), and the bag should have a waist strap that your child always uses.
