    Mudroom Stuck in a Rut?

The goal: To create an organizing system even the kids can maintain.

The solution: If the kids use the mudroom to get ready for school, transform the area into a way station. Real Simple organizers turned an Expedit bookcase ($90, ikea.com) on its side, then slid labeled Nostalgisk boxes ($16 for two, ikea.com) onto the shelves. Each child has a column of storage, and extra columns contain miscellaneous items. Lockers roll out for easy access to kids' shoes.

The goal: To create a more functional work area and free up the countertops and other work surfaces for cooking.

The solution: Real Simple turned a makeshift office into command central with an array of wall-mounted tools: a magnet board, a magnetic calendar, a magazine pocket, a mail bin, and a multislot organizer. A rolling file cabinet (it slides into the adjacent pantry when not in use) keeps paperwork in order. With the surfaces clear, the island and the counter to the left of the stove can be used for food prep.

The goal: To minimize the mess and make the office a more orderly environment.

The solution: Start shredding documents to whittle down the mountain of papers. Sort remaining papers into a file cabinet or boxes. A wall of Elfa shelving in White & Driftwood (from $250, containerstore.com) replaces a traditional desk. The extra-long bottom shelf serves as a work space that can accommodate more than one person.

Very pretty, but I think that for myself, my problem is that I don't have a mudroom, a gigantic kitchen, or a dedicated office. My laundry "room" is even just a closet with short narrow shelves. I guess we expand to occupy the space we have.

I agree. Not realistic for the average homeowner. The mudroom really made me laugh. 1) most of us don't have a mudroom, 2) the idea that kids will actually USE the drawers and bins rather than dumping stuff on top or next to them is wishful thinking. The only advantage? You don't have to go as far to put stuff away.

Right~~!! these are not realistic, if I had 250.00 dollars I would not be spending it on shelves.
      Nice colors though

So true, great ideas if you have the space. My 'mudroom' is a plastic storage container by the front door. That's where the muddy boots and coats that smell like horses go. It works, we all do what we can I suppose.

If I had a mudroom I'd be organized. Unfortunately our house is old and has very limited closet space.

My home is 750 sq ft. We have 2,3 yr olds. We have a mud room/ back door entrance (approx 30 inch wide wall) which is a storage rack/hanger from ikea (19.99-29.99). Under it we have a shoe rack (12.44 closetmaid). My toddlers love to place their own jackets on racks, and take off, or put on, shoes in thier own spot.
On the kitchen walls are eraser board/magnetic holders which i scedule stuff for reminders. In our narrow living room we have a small IKEA corner desk (149.99) which on the walls we also have 18in shelves (home depot) all going up where we store stuff neatly and a box labeled (organize) I throw crap in i dont want to deal with right away. then when kiddos sleep some nights i got threw it. MY POINT IS IT IS POSSIABLE! MY KIDS DO VERY WELL IN ROUTINE. routine is hard to follow without organization. I have a HUGE TIP! Invest in a SHark. I promise you'll love it. Especially if you have Little ones.
