DIY Disguises: Alice in Wonderland Costumes

    By Shelley Wolson

    Adventurous Ensembles

There's something about the story of Alice in Wonderland that's perfectly suited for Halloween. Perhaps it's the fantastical nature of the story's adventure, or maybe it's the iconic nature of the four main characters' costumes-but we didn't need a special reason to recreate the signature looks of Alice, Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter and White Rabbit. Using just a few basic clothing items and craft supplies, it's easy to reconstruct Alice's magical world. Just don't forget to watch out for that rabbit hole!

    Alice in Wonderland

Every costume is an adventure, and this one is no exception. To transform yourself into Alice, start with a lightblue puff-sleeve dress or shirt and skirt combo. Add a white bib apron edged with light-blue rickrack, white flats and white headband, and you'll be down the rabbit hole in no time!

    Mad Hatter

Take a plaid shirt, pair it with a checkered vest, khaki pants, striped socks and checkered sneakers, and you've created this zany character straight from Alice's magical world. When he puts on a red satin ribbon bowtie and an oversize kelly green top hat lined with yellow ribbon, your hatter is dressed for the tea party.

    Cheshire Cat

Unlike the mischievous fictional feline, this kitty is more well-behaved, and certainly comfy and warm in his gray hoodie and sweatpants, ringed with black blurry paint stripes. Felt triangle ears and black gloves for paws complete the look for this costume that is part Tim Burton, part Lewis Carroll.

    White Rabbit

You won't be late for any date when you dream up this darling white rabbit. Your little one can hop right into the getup, using a white turtleneck, white pants and a white cotton fabric tabard sporting a red felt heart decorated with glitter paint. Finish with a fuzzy bunny-ear headband and lipstick hearts on the cheeks.
